MANILA, Philippines – American actress Sarah Jessica Parker was warmly welcomed by her Filipino fans on her first visit to the country.

Parker graced the launch of the SM Aura mall at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig on Thursday. Dressed in an elegant sheer black dress, the actress was all smiles as she talked about her first impressions of Manila.

“Everybody is so kind, such loving hospitality,” she said in a press conference after the ribbon cutting ceremony. “The food and the people, everything. I even love the traffic.”

“I’m always attracted to cities,” added Parker, who currently lives in New York with her husband, Matthew Broderick, and their three children.

“When I’m going around, it’s not so much the shopping, it’s much for me what my eyes see, you know? The different colors, the jeepneys, all that kind of ‘shopping with the eye’ outside of [just] shopping. That, to me, is equally as interesting.”

“I was looking around the city here, and there’s so much to see. It’s so alive, there’s a lot of vibrancy in the city.”

Parker vowed to return to the Philippines soon, especially after hearing about the country’s beautiful beaches.

For now, she said she is looking forward to seeing The SM Store’s “enormous and incredible shoe department.”

On Carrie
Parker, best known for her leading role as Carrie Bradshaw on the hit television series “Sex and the City,” also shared her similarities and differences with the fictional character, a fashionista and New York newspaper columnist.

“I always thought Carrie was much more bold than I was,” the American actress said, referring to Carrie’s fashion choices. “But I think I learned from her that there is something kind of exciting about breaking rules…like the idea of mixing patterns, and all of these [styles] that are unconventional. I learned a lot [from the character].”

“What I think of my life is very, very different from that of Carrie Bradshaw. The choices she makes are very, very different,” she added, responding to die-hard fans who already think of her and her character as one person. “I have children, she never had any. But I think our love for New York City and her enthusiasm for fashion are two things [that we share].”

Unlike the very fashionable Carrie, Parker said she prefers to keep things simple on a normal day by wearing only jeans or a light dress.

“On a Saturday morning, I’d probably be in my nightgown with my kids for a while, and then if I don’t have to be very presentable, I’d be wearing jeans or corduroys. Since it’s getting warm in New York, maybe a light dress,” she said.

When asked about her favorite item in the closet, Parker said: “Probably a pair of blue suede Manolo Blahnik pumps.”

‘Be yourself’

Parker, who is considered by many as a fashion icon, said she is impressed with the Filipinos’ style choices, as well as the way they carry themselves.

“I love seeing all the women, everybody in this room. All of you women are dressed differently, yet you all look amazing. You all look gorgeous and I think you genuinely love yourselves. And I think that’s my impression of Filipino style,” the American actress said.

Parker made the statement as she lamented that some people, particularly women, tend to blindly follow fashion trends, even if these no longer reflect their tastes and personalities.

To those who think they have not found their personal style yet, she gave this advice: “Be yourself.”
“I don’t dress [for fans or critics],” she said when asked of what she considers when picking a dress for the red carpet. “I think the best you can do is to be yourself. Dress in what you feel good in.”

“One cannot leave the house trying to please everyone,” added the actress, who donated $100,000 to charity via the SM Foundation.

“I think the biggest challenge for young women is to trust themselves, and to not always look around and want to look like others and dress like them,” she ended.

MANILA - Hollywood star Vin Diesel and other cast of "Fast and Furious 6" wowed Pinoy fans in a meet and greet to promote the 6th installment of the film at the SM Mall of Asia on Wednesday night.

Joining Diesel in Manila are co-stars Michelle Rodriguez, Gina Carano and Luke Evans.

"Mahal ko kayo. I love Manila. I love you all so much. We are so proud to do the first Hollywood premiere [of the franchise] here in the Philippines," Diesel said.

"I can feel the love from you. I think this is the best place I've ever been to in my life," Diesel added.
The film's producer, Neil Moritz, was also present at the reception.

"Who knows, someday we may shoot here," he said.

Moritz said he loves Filipino food, calling it the best he's ever had.

Meanwhile, Evans serenaded the crowd with a few lines from the Philippine ballad, "Kailangan Kita."

Evans learned how to sing the Tagalog song after visiting the country 10 years ago.

He said he also has many Filipino friends who were part of the musical "Miss Saigon" in London, where a lot of Asian characters were played by Filipino performers.

Evans said he even met with some of his Filipino friends as soon as he arrived in Manila Tuesday night.

Rodriguez echoed her co-stars' sentiments, saying "I love you Manila, I just love you, you are so beautiful."

After the meet and greet, some members of the media had the chance to watch the premiere sponsored by GBX in partnership with Solar Entertainment.

"Fast and Furious 6" is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on May 24.
