MANILA, Philippines – Not only is Nonito Donaire Jr. considered a heavy favorite going to the unification title match against Guillermo Rigondeaux, he is also hailed by ESPN as the best “little boxer” fighting 130 pounds and below.
The list compiled by ESPN’s Brian Campbell showed Donaire ahead of WBA super bantamweight champion Rigondeaux, WBA junior flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez, WBO and Ring Magazine featherweight king Mikey Garcia and WBC super bantamweight title holder Abner Mares.
“Donaire's not only the class of this list... he should be the top 3 pound-for-pound fighter in the whole sport, winning ESPN.com top fighter of the year,” Campbell said in ESPN’s Making the Rounds.
But Campbell believes Donaire will have a difficult assignment in Rigondeaux when the two boxers square off in the historic Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
“He's got a tough test against the Number 2 man Guillermo Rigondeaux, whom he'll fight on April 13,” he said.
Donaire, a four-division champion and current WBO super bantamweight title holder, is ranked No. 5 in Ring Magazine’s pound-for-pound list.
