...the Amigo

Movie shot in Bohol making waves in US

By ROY C. MABASA
September 12, 2011

MANILA, Philippines — A Hollywood movie shot entirely in the Philippines and featuring a number of Filipino actors is currently making waves in the United States.

“Amigo,” which was shot entirely in Bohol, is currently playing in Washington, DC, Virginia Beach, Las Vegas, Seattle, and Portland.

It will also be shown this month in Albuquerque, Dallas, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Denver.

Two theaters in West End Cinema showed “Amigo” last September 2 and tickets in both theaters were sold out.

The New York Times described “Amigo” as “entertaining and relevant” while the NY Daily News called “Amigo” as the best work of Oscar-nominated writer-director John Sayles “in a decade.” For its part, Rolling Stone Magazine said the film is “a cause for celebration.”

“Amigo” features Filipino actors Joel Torre, Rio Locsin, Ronnie Lazaro, and Bembol Roco. It also stars Academy award winner Chris Cooper (Adaptation), Garret Dillahunt (“No Country for Old Men,” “Deadwood”) and Tony award winner Yul Vasquez.

Set in the 1900s, “Amigo” depicts the circumstances surrounding the early days of the American occupation of the Philippines.

It tells the struggle faced by a town mayor, played by Torre, when he comes under pressure to collaborate with American troops and to remain loyal to his people, including his brother who heads the local guerilla movement.

The movie is one of only a handful of films directed by an American to address the war.

Other Filipinos in the team included writer and journalist Pete Lacaba, who did the translation, and cinematographer Lee Briones-Meily. The film’s post production was also done in the Philippines.

Sayles hailed the Philippines as a great place where one can make “beautiful films” even though many US-based producers are not aware of this.

Sayles made the statement when he and “Amigo” producer Maggie Renzi visited the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. and called on Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr.

During the call, Renzi and Sayles said they “loved working in Bohol” and they had “great actors and wonderful crew.”

Renzi said in the Philippines, “in every other area, work is exemplary.”

Sayles also informed Cuisia that some scenes in the fourth installment of “The Bourne Identity (The Bourne Legacy)” starring Academy Award winner Matt Damon will be filmed on location in the Philippines in January next year.

The critically-acclaimed director expressed the wish that more films about the history of the Philippines, in particular, the establishment of the Philippine Republic, will be made.

Sayles said he also made an extensive research of the historical relations between the Philippines and the United States, including traveling to the Philippines, to visit significant sites of the Philippine-American War.

...the co-director of Pixar

Cavite-born UST alum co-directs Pixar film

By: Ruben V. Nepales
Philippine Daily Inquirer
04 September 2011

FILIPINO animator Ronnie del Carmen (below) served as story supervisor of “UP,” a computer-animated comedy-adventure film produced by Pixar.

LOS ANGELES – Folks, pop open the champagne: Cavite-born, University of Santo Tomas-educated Ronnie del Carmen is codirecting a film at Pixar. It’s one of the biggest and most important breaks ever given to a Filipino-American in the US movie industry.

Ronnie, one of the talented “Pixnoys” in the acclaimed animation studio, is collaborating with director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera in the project with the working title, “The Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside The Mind.”

A statement from the studio reads, “Pixar takes audiences on incredible journeys into extraordinary worlds – from the darkest depths of the ocean to the top of the tepui mountains in South America; from the fictional metropolis of Monstropolis to a futuristic fantasy of outer space… The inventive new film will take you to a place that everyone knows, but no one has ever seen: the world inside the human mind.

The film reunites Ronnie, Pete and Jonas, who worked as story supervisor, director and producer, respectively, of “UP,” the first animated movie to ever open the Cannes Film Festival. “UP” swept the best animated feature honors, including the Academy and Golden Globe Awards, in 2009.

There’s buzz that the movie’s script is being written by Michael Arndt, whose credits include “Toy Story 3” and “Little Miss Sunshine,” which won him a best original screenplay Oscar. Reports suggested that the film’s story is “specifically about the formation of ideas.” The exciting premise promises a highly original movie that would inspire Pixar’s geniuses to further push the possibilities of animation artistry and technology.

Disney announced this film project, including Ronnie as a codirector, and another new film, “Monsters University,” at the recent D23 Expo, an annual event.

Ronnie, who majored in advertising at UST’s College of Fine Arts and Design, worked in Makati’s top ad agencies. After moving to the United States, he began in television animation, working on such shows as “Freakazoid!,” “Where’s Waldo?,” “Widget, the World Watcher” and the “Batman” animated series. He worked at DreamWorks and Warner Bros. before settling at Pixar, where his credits include being the story supervisor on “Finding Nemo” and handling the story duties on “Wall-E” and “Ratatouille.”

He directed the short film, “Dug’s New Mission,” which came with the “UP” DVD-Blu-ray. Ronnie has won several awards, including an Annie (which honors the best in animation) for storyboarding in an animated feature (DreamWorks’ “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron”) and a Daytime Emmy for best special class animated program (as director of “Freakazoid!”).

On his trips back home, Ronnie finds time to give lectures and encourage aspiring animation talents. He has shared his talents with DC and Dark Horse comic readers and publishes his comic book series, Paper Biscuit.

Ronnie’s brothers, Louie and Rick, who are also UST alums, are enjoying burgeoning careers as animators in rival studios.

...the Silver awardee at Silver Screen Award

Imbestigador wins silver at the US International Film & Video Fest

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Imbestigador, one of GMA’s flagship news and public affairs programs, won the Silver Screen Award at the recent US International Film & Video Festival (USIFVF). It is the only Philippine program to win the coveted award this year.

Smuggled Pinoys, the Imbestigador special report on human trafficking, which aired last year in celebration of the program’s 10th anniversary, bested entries from all over the world in the Documentary: Television: TV News: Investigative/Special Reports category.

Hosted by Mike Enriquez (photo), the Imbestigador team entered the sinister and organized realm of human trafficking to uncover the plight of “smuggled Filipinos.”

These are a growing number of Filipino workers who risk everything, from their safety to their savings, just to secure a decent job abroad. But instead of getting a chance at a better life, they end up as modern day slaves — delivered, exported and sold to foreign syndicates in different parts of the world like commodities.

Through extensive preparation, research and documentation, Imbestigador traces the human traffickers’ trail and expose their illicit methods of recruitment: from convincing the innocent victims in the most impoverished areas in the Philippines, to smuggling them to one of Southeast Asia’s primary destination for trafficked persons — Malaysia.

Now on its 11th year, Imbestigador continues to provide fearless exposes, hard-hitting investigative reports and compelling cases. Just recently, the program was the first to break the story on VIP treatment in prison with its V.I.P. sa Preso episode which exposed the special treatment that moneyed inmates enjoy, as well as the greed, corruption and other criminal activities inside the very prison that is supposed to reform inmates.

“I dream of — and I’m not sure if this will come true during my generation — a time when programs like Imbestigador would not be needed anymore. Ibig sabihin nun, wala nang nang-aabuso, nanlalamang, nangloloko. Thank you, U.S. International Film & Video Festival. Hindi namin kayo tatantanan,” Enriquez said.

Imbestigador airs every Saturday after Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho.

...the Tunnel's director

Pinoy filmmaker directs viral horror movie The Tunnel

Filipino filmmaker Carlo Ledesma in his element. Photo by Alex Weltlinger
In the vast dark of the abandoned tunnels of Sydney, no one can hear you scream.

The premise behind The Tunnel, like many horror movies, starts out simple and ends with a lot of running, blood and terror-filled moments. Working in the fairly recent subgenre of “found footage" like Hollywood movies Cloverfield, Diary of the Dead and The Blair Witch Project, The Tunnel is set in the miles and miles of underground warrens of the Australian metropolis.

At the directorial helm is multi-awarded Filipino filmmaker Carlo Ledesma, who used to work on the popular local sports show Gameplan. A Bacolod-native, he moved to Sydney around 2005 and has since set up a thriving film making headquarters there.

“I do feel like I’ve hit my stride here, creatively and professionally," says Ledesma. “Sydney is such a film-friendly place- the government is very supportive, the crews are world-class, and it is relatively easy to source out the latest in camera and sound equipment."

What secret creature skulks and hunts in the labyrinthine corridors where the darkness never goes out? Photo by Nicolle Adrichem

The Tunnel follows a team of broadcast journalists as they track down a story regarding a possible government cover-up of Sydney’s water shortage by its own local government. While the documentarists do get the story they were looking for, something else finds them as well.

What secret creature skulks and hunts in the labyrinthine corridors where the darkness never goes out? It’s up to you to make up your own theory. One thing’s for sure, these monsters are fast, strong and can see in the dark. And when you’ve only got a camera light and some flashlights against them, things start to get very interesting very quickly. In an eye blink, The Tunnel becomes a study in survival horror.

“We wanted to put our own spin on the ‘found footage’ genre," says Ledesma on their decision to approach the story with point-of-view cameras. “. . . We thought of incorporating the found footage elements into a pseudo news story, a survivor’s narrative of what exactly happened in the tunnels."

When you’ve only got a camera light and some flashlights against unseen monsters, things start to get very interesting very quickly. Photo by Sam Clark

Unlike most horror movies though, The Tunnel wasn’t crafted to be shown in theaters. It was made to be downloaded by an on-line audience and made to be passed around by virtual word of mouth through social networks and blog posts.

The Tunnel isn't meant to be seen in theaters. Photo by Alex Weltlinger
It was also funded in what the producers and filmmakers are calling “The 135K Project." 135 people buy a single frame of the movie at a dollar each, and in turn the proceeds go into the completion and polishing of the final product.

The Tunnel’s website says: “We figured that movie posters and collectable frames from movies are being sold every day, so what if we could raise the money to make The Tunnel by selling every individual frame of it? We would be able to make a movie unencumbered by a studio’s need for box office."

Looks like it’s worked out very well. The official torrent site has since gotten upwards of a half-million downloads. The unit sales of the physical copies of the DVDs (which includes special features like still galleries and behind-the-scenes) aren’t too shabby either.

With such success, The Tunnel is shaping up to be “the viral movie of the year." It’s also gotten Ledesma entered into “The Internet and Movie Database’s (IMDB) Modern Masters of Horror". A list that includes big name directors Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy) and Eli Roth (Hostel).

There’s some very expressive images and vignette inserts in this movie that might jar the horror fan expecting only relentless blood and gore. But to me they’re a welcome artistic touch. They’re also effective in heightening the gloom and desolation of the movie’s underworld theme.
The nature of the creatures themselves is an intriguing mystery. Photo by Alex Weltlinger

The nature of the creatures themselves is an intriguing mystery. Much of the suspense centers around not knowing just how powerful they are or what exactly they are or are not capable of.

“I’m a huge cryptozoology fan," explains Ledesma. “So I wanted to put a definite mystery behind the creature lurking in the tunnels, keep its appearance shrouded in the shadows as much as possible. We do have a very specific story for what the creature is, but it’s so much fun hearing people’s theories." — TJD, GMA News

MANILA, Philippines – The proliferation of nasty controversies these days apparently can’t water down the recent feats of local personalities.

Joining the ranks of our countrymen who champion Filipino pride here and abroad, led of course by the unstoppable international boxing champ Manny Pacquiao, are a handful of FIlipinos with their recent victories and accolades earned in their respective fields.

Champion for kids, too

Boxer-congressman Manny Pacquiao will go head-to-head with fellow sports superstars in one of the most popular entertainment events in the US, the 2011 Teen Choice Awards, which will be held on Aug. 7.

The champion pugilist is nominated in the "Choice Athlete: Male" category alongside National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Most Valuable Player Dirk Nowitzki, mixed martial artist Jon Jones, baseball player Albert Pujols and snowboarder-skateboarder-surfer Shaun White.

Taking over Europe

In another part of the world, another Filipino act is making waves for their singing prowess: Ateneo De Manila College Glee Club (ACGC).

As reported by ABS-CBN News, the renowned 34-member group, composed of 17 boys and 17 girls, has dominated various chorale competitions in Europe, having been awarded the grand prize at the 33rd Varna International May Choir Competition in Bulgaria, as well as the first prize in its Mixed Choir category, and the Best Interpretation of a Bulgarian piece.

In Switzerland this year, the 90-year-old music ensemble bagged first prize at the 47th Montreux Choral Festival. They also took home People’s Choice, Program’s Choice, Compulsory Work’s Prize, and Interpretation Prize.

ACGC has reaped recognition at the Harmonie Festival 2011 in Germany as well, namely first prize in Folk Song rendition and third prize in Mixed Choir category.

Their triumphs didn’t stop there as they placed second at the 11th Mednarodno Zborovsko Tekmovanje Maribor (or the International Choral Competition Maribor) in Slovenia.

To top it all, the same report added that the ACGC qualified for the European Grand Prix in 2012.

In an interview on “Umagang Kay Ganda” on July 6, ACGC choir director Ma. Lourdes Hermo noted, “We do our period music very well. We also rehearse our folk songs and this time, we did it with good choreography.”

For the Filipino filmmakers

In literature, a trilingual coffee table book that pays tribute to some of the finest filmmakers of the country was launched last July 5 by Instituto Cervantes De Manila.

The book titled "44 Cineastas Filipinos, Filipino Filmmakers, Mga Sineastang Pilipino" is a compilation of portraits by Oscar Orengo, a Spanish photographer, who shot the directors in their location of choice in Manila.

The photos were first exhibited in 2009 during the Pelicula film festival.

Among the featured filmmakers in "44" are veterans like Eddie Romero, Jose Javier Reyes, and Celso Ad Castillo, as well as the new breed of internationally-acclaimed directors such as Brillante Mendoza, Raya Martin, Ellen Ramos, Byron Bryant and Paolo Villaluna.

Distinguished alumna

Meanwhile, Luchi Cruz-Valdes, one of the most respected and multi-awarded journalists in the country, has just added another feather in her cap.

The head of TV5’s News and Information Division is the recipient of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award for Broadcast Journalism for this year, reported Interaksyon.com.

Cruz-Valdes was an “iskolar ng bayan” back in the '80s, having earned both her Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in Broadcast Communication in the university.

In her decades-spanning career, Cruz-Valdes has merited multiple honors from prestigious award-giving bodies, including a silver medal for Outstanding Social and Current Affairs documentary at the New York Festivals.

In 2001, she was also the bestowed the Broadcaster of the Year award by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkater sa Pilipinas (KBP).

Student filmmakers from Visayas to compete in Seoul filmfest

TACLOBAN CITY, LEYTE— Three student film makers from the Visayas region will represent the Philippines in the annual Seoul International Youth Film Festival (SIYFF) set on July 7 to 13.

The three, namely Wency Anotado from Santa Margarita town of Samar, Jericho Codilan from Salcedo town of Eastern Samar and Mareza Impas of Camotes, Cebu were declared champions in the recently concluded “Kabataan sa BisayasMedia Festival.”

For the film festival, Wency ranked first in the mini-documentary category for his entry “Batang User,” Jericho won for the for his public service announcement (PSA) entitled “Kalsada,” and Mareza won for her music video entitled “Pasagad”.

After winning the local film fest, Wency said he is now determined to take up journalism in college when he graduates from high school in two years.

Jericho's entry “Kalsada” depicts the effects of poorly constructed roads to children, which resulted in the repair of the road after a local executive viewed his entry.

The three young film makers received cash prizes and trophies, and were also the recipient of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) special awards and the Leyte Governor’s Choice Awards, where they were given $200 each as pocket money for their trip to Seoul in July.

Shoot in Ilocos, get a subsidy

By Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
05/04/2011

BADOC—Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos treated the cast and crew of “Joey Gosiengfiao’s Temptation Island,” led by director Chris Martinez and Regal producer Roselle Monteverde, to a tour of the Juan Luna Shrine recently in this sleepy corner of the Solid North.

“Our province is rich in historical and cultural treasures,” Marcos told the visitors. In an exclusive interview with Inquirer Entertainment, she revealed her plan to draft a “counterpart subsidy” program for production companies that choose the province as location for TV, movie or commercial shoots.

“We are eyeing a 25- to 50-percent subsidy,” she said. For every peso that a production company spends here, the local government is willing to match it “25 to 50 percent.”

“We recognize these firms’ contribution to our economy, in terms of providing employment to residents and promoting our tourist spots,” Marcos said, noting that Paoay has long been a favorite location among local and foreign productions.

The 1980 original and the 2011 remake of “Temptation Island” are set in the sand dunes of Paoay, where last year’s “Emir” was partly shot, too.

Sand Dunes, Paoay Ilocos Norte

Fernando Poe Jr.’s “Panday” series, Ishmael Bernal’s “Himala” and Hollywood films “Mad Max” and “Born on the Fourth of July” were shot in the sand dunes park as well.

The province is also celebrated for its scenic beaches. Pagudpud was a frequent location for films and TV shows produced by Armida Siguion-Reyna. The recent Miss Earth pageant was held in White Rock beach.

Ilocos Norte also boasts manmade wonders, particularly the centuries-old St. Augustine Church in Paoay.

Marcos said the Bangui windmills were recently featured in an ad shoot. “The winding bridge Patapat Viaduct (in Pagudpud, near the foot of the Cordilleras) is called the French Riviera of the North,” she added.

Patapat Viaduct, Pagudpud Ilocos Norte

The governor recently met with Briccio Santos, head of the Film Development Council of the Philippines, to prepare for the Sineng Pambansa film festival in Ilocos Norte on Oct. 26 and 27.

“We have our own version of Halloween, which we call the ar-arya,” Marcos noted. “The film fest will feature horror films, along with movies on funeral traditions and superstitions like Soxie Topacio’s ‘Ded na si Lolo.’ In Ilocos, we follow all sorts of colorful customs.”

Film on LarraƱaga's conviction wins at Tribeca film fest

 05/02/2011

MANILA, Philippines - "Give Up Tomorrow," a documentary feature film about the case of Paco LarraƱaga who was convicted for the 1997 murder of Chiong sisters in Cebu, has bagged the Heineken Audience Award at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival.

Director Michael Collins took home $25,000, according to the festival's official website.
The second place went to "Semper Fi: Always Faithful," while "Carol Channing: Larger Than Life" placed third.

LarraƱaga and other scions of rich families in Cebu were convicted for the kidnapping, murder and rape of Marijoy and Jacqueline Chiong in Cebu. The Supreme Court imposed the death sentence on all but one of the convicts. Their sentences were commuted to life imprisonment after President Arroyo abolished the death penalty.

In 2009, LarraƱaga, a Filipino-Spanish citizen, was transferred to the Spanish government where he is serving the rest of his term.

"Give Up Tomorrow" points to a number of holes in his conviction and suggests widespread corruption in the Philippines. -With a report from Reuters

Filipino film about women wins in New York fest

By Marinel R. Cruz
Cebu Daily News
04/26/2011

“GANAP na Babae (Garden of Eve),” an indie film about women made by women directors, won the best in cinematography award at the recently concluded Soho International Film Festival in New York City.

Film producer Will Fredo accepted the trophy during ceremonies held at the Capitale in Manhattan on April 22. Fredo thanked cinematographers Myk Manalastas and Gym Lumbrera for their “valuable contributions.”

A total of seven awards were given, including a technical award called Mient’s pick, or excellence in cinematography, which was handed out for the first time that night.

“It was supposed to recognize the technical mastery of a movie, awarded by the film distributor Mient,” Fredo wrote in a Facebook entry shortly after the event. “I seriously thought the award would again go to Todd Bellanca (director of “The Bad Penny,” best feature award winner). When [our movie’s title was] announced, all of us were floored. With everyone in shock, I composed myself and thanked the SIFFNYC and Mient.”

“Ganap na Babae” presents three interweaving stories about Filipino women through the eyes of contemporary women directors Rica Arevalo, Ellen Ramos and Sarah Roxas: A prostitute (Mercedes Cabral) looks back on her life. Sweet potato farmer Elena (Jam PĆ©rez) migrates to Japan as a mail-order bride, leaving her family to her sister Milagros (Sue Prado). A widow (Boots Anson Roa) falls in love with a younger man (Rome Mallari).

Hollywood opens its doors to Echo

04/26/2011

MANILA, Philippines - The Hollywood red carpet is about to be rolled out for Jericho Rosales, whose film, “Subject I Love You,” will be screened at the Newport Beach Film Festival in Orange County in southern California at the end of the month.

Echo, as Rosales is fondly called in show business, could barely contain his excitement when talking about his movie, which will be screened alongside numerous films from around the world.

“Subject I Love You” is the only film from the Philippines that will be shown by Hollywood distributors.
Echo hopes this is another opportunity for Filipinos to make a mark in the international scene.

Echo added that gaining recognition in Hollywood has long been a dream for him, a dream he shared with “The Hunks” members earlier in their showbiz careers.

“The Hunks” was an all-male group composed of ABS-CBN matinee idols Rosales, Diether Ocampo, Carlos Agassi, Piolo Pascual and Bernard Palanca.

While the actor admits he is already feeling the jitters of the festival premiere, he is confident that “Subject I Love You” has a captivating story to tell that will catch the attention of the American audience.

The movie is a love story revolving around the “love” computer virus, which was developed by a Filipino that sent computer firms in a huge frenzy at the beginning of the decade.

Rosales shared he is already preparing to meet with Hollywood distributors.

Meanwhile, Rosales, who is now unattached, said he is not bringing a date to the red carpet event.

While the young actor may be solo on the love front for now, he hopes he will not be alone in supporting the movie as he asks for the support and presence of our kababayans abroad.

“Subject I Love You” will be screened on April 30 in Newport Beach, California.

...the soap opera Mara Clara

'Mara Clara' remake gets Banff nomination

MANILA, Philippines - ABS-CBN's remake of the 90s classic soap opera "Mara Clara" is set to compete in Canada's 2011 Banff World Media Festival in June.

According to Banff's official website, "Mara Clara" is one of the two Asian nominees in the Telenovelas & Soap Operas category, pitted against South Korea's "Bread, Love and Dreams," popularly known locally as GMA 7's "Baker King."

Aside from "Bread, Love and Dreams," "Mara Clara" will be up against the United Kingdom's "Coronation Street"; and the USA's "Days of Our Lives," "Eva Luna" and "The Queen of the South" in the same category.

"Mara Clara" was originally aired on ABS-CBN from 1992 until 1997. The original story, created by Emil Cruz, Jr., follows the life of two young ladies, the meek but poor Mara and the rich villain Clara, who were switched at birth. The original starred Judy Ann Santos (Mara) and Gladys Reyes (Clara).

In 2010, ABS-CBN announced that a remake of the hit TV series will be aired and will star rookie actresses Kathryn Bernardo as Mara and Julia Montes as Clara. The show is currently airing on ABS-CBN's primetime block.

The Banff World Media Festival, also known as the "Rockies," is an "internationally-recognized awards program celebrating the very best in international television and digital media production" and will run from June 12-15.

Generally, the festival is divided into three categories: the Fiction Rockies, the Non-Fiction Rockies and the Interactive Rockies. The Telenovelas & Soap Operas category is under the Fiction Rockies, a category that "recognizes the very best in scripted television programming from around the world."

The Fiction Rockies awards ceremony will take place on June 12 at the AOL Canada Theater and will be hosted by "Entertainment Tonight" Canada's Hollywood correspondent Matte Babel.

Pinoy filmmaker in Cannes Directors' Fortnight

Auraeus Solito's "Busong" is among 21 feature films in this year's Cannes Directors' Fortnight.

The selection was announced on April 19 at noon on its official site.

His fifth feature film, Busong, is the first Palawanon indigenous film. Its title is the Palawan concept of fate or instant karma, and the film focuses on how nature reacts instantly to man's disrespect of nature and other men.

In Busong, Alessandra de Rossi plays Punay, who is born with wounds on her feet and cannot step on the earth.

Her brother, Angkarang, carries her through a hammock, as he searches the changing landscape of Palawan in hopes of finding a healer who can cure Punay.

Different people help him carry his sister along the way – a woman looking for her husband, a fisherman who lost his boat, and a young man who is searching for himself – and each one meets their fate.

Shot in Palawan and written by Kanakan-Balintagos and Henry Burgos, the cast includes Clifford Banagale, Rodrigo Santikan, Bonivie Budao, Vincent Magbanua, Mina Tesorio, and Dax Alejandro.

Artistic director FrƩdƩric Boyer says Busong transcends the border between documentary and fiction.
"The film deals with animism and is very close to nature. It has been shot without any apparent wish to be selected in Cannes or to be picked by a co-producer," he says in his comments on this year's selection.

Solito, though born outside of tribal land, comes from a lineage of Shaman-Kings from the Palawan tribe. He is one of the leading independent filmmakers from the Philippines, and is not new to international acclaim.

His first feature film "The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros" won 15 international awards, and has brought Solito to Montreal, Toronto, Okinawa, Utah, Berlin, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, New York, Las Palmas, Spain, Sydney, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Warsaw, and London.

The feature film was also named one of the Ten Best Films of the Decade (2000-2009) by Gawad Urian.
"Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros" was followed by "Tuli" (2006), "Pisay" (2008) and "Boy" (2009).

Keeping the good news for weeks

Solito was informed that his film was in the selection two weeks ago, but he could not share the news until the selection was officially revealed yesterday.

"It was so hard to keep it for two weeks," said Solito, who was speechless when he first received the good news.

"I was playing Plants vs Zombies when the e-mail came in. My hands were so cold. It was one of those unexpected gifts," he said, adding that his mother had even gone to St. Jude Church to pray a novena.

"I was told that I would be happy for the first three days, after that it's a lot of hard work," says Solito.

He said the team had to get to work immediately in order to meet the technical requirements, since they had submitted a rough cut.

"Ang daming technical requirements. Last week, nag picture lock kami, the other day we were refining the sound mix, next week we'll be doing color correction," he said, adding that with a fifty-percent discount from Roadrunner, the film would meet the deadliest deadline.

"Luckily, I have a very good technical team. I want to prove that we can come up with a world class digital cinema package," he says.

"This is actually my dream film," Solito told GMA News Online.

He said one of the stories in the film was inspired by the tale of a woman searching the forest for the sound of a chainsaw. When his aunt told him the story in 1994, he drew it using stick figures.

"For the first time, I saw the world in frames," he said.

He calls Busong a trilogy within a trilogy. The story based on a Palawan myth of Punay and her brother threads three chapters together: forest, sea and mountain.

"Each chapter contains a busong," Solito said.

Busong will premiere in July in the Directors Showcase of Cinemalaya, which funded the film.

Cannes Directors' Fortnight pays attention to the annual international production of fiction features, short films and documentaries. It is the only section at Cannes that is open to the public. The films selected at the Directors' Fortnight may receive the Camera d'Or prize.

Other Filipino filmmakers who have been featured in the Directors' Fortnight are Raya Martin for "Now Showing" and Brillante Mendoza for "Foster Child." — LBG, GMA News
