Aklan’s engineered bamboo industry takes off

KALIBO, Aklan, Philippines (PIA) — Aklan’s engineered bamboo industry is starting to take off, with one municipal production center focused on the versatile grass plant already operating, according to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here.

DTI-Aklan Provincial Director Diosdado Cadena said first to embark in the industry with great optimism is the town of Libacao, a hinterland municipality in Aklan known for its abundant bamboo.

Another town, Malinao, will soon follow suit, even as the DTI also eyes Balete, Altavas, Banga, Ibajay, Malay and other towns in Aklan as production centers in the future.

Cadena said Libacao has also began producing bamboo slats which can subsequently be manufactured into engineered bamboos, after the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) by the DTI and the local government of Libacao under Mayor Charito Navaro in mid-January, 2011.

The DTI also signed a MOA with Malinao through Mayor Ariel Igoy.

Libacao’s production center is located in Barangay Guadalupe.

Cadena said Libacao is expected to produce some 960,000 bamboo slats which, he said, is “worth millions of pesos and will certainly benefit bamboo farmers and workers in the municipality.”
He added, “The bamboo slats will be delivered in container vans to the Cottage Industry Technology Center (CITC) – which is an agency attached with DTI - in Manila”, Cadena said.

In turn, the CITC, which is a service-oriented agency attached to the DTI, will facilitate the selling of the bamboo slats to customers and, in the process, convert the material into cash.
