...the PH independence experience in Korea

Festivals lined up for 'PHL month' in South Korea

Activities have been lined up this June in South Korea to mark the 113th Philippine Independence Day and the 150th birth anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

"For Filipinos, the month of June is rife with meaning. Not only did we gain our freedom on 12 June 1898, but Dr. Jose Rizal-our national hero who galvanized the independence movement in the Philippines after it endured three centuries of colonization-was born on 19 June 1861," the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

For the whole month of June, the Millennium Seoul Hilton will feature Filipino cuisine and culture at the Orangerie Buffet Restaurant.

Renowned chefs from the Philippines will prepare favorites such as kare-kare (ox-tail in peanut sauce and sautéed shrimp) and mechado (Philippine beef stew).

As part of the Filipino food festival, Philippine artworks and cultural performances will also be featured at the hotel.

Philippine officials, including Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz and Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim are expected to take part in the month-long celebration, the DFA said.

"The Food Festival will likewise be the theme for the diplomatic reception on June 8, which will feature traditional songs and dances to be performed by professional cultural troupes from the Philippines," the DFA said.

The Philippine Embassy also handed out awards to Korean individuals and groups that contributed to the welfare of Filipino migrants.

For Filipino-Korean children, a special program introducing traditional Filipino games was one of the highlights of the afternoon activities.

Filipino Migrant Workers Day

"We also celebrate our Migrant Workers Day in honor of some eight million Filipinos who have found a second home abroad," Philippine Ambassador to South Korea Luis Cruz said.

Philippine Migrant Workers' Day was celebrated in Korea on May 29, the DFA said.

Filipino migrants from as far as Jeollanam-do gathered at the Yeouido Hanggang Park to take part in the celebration of Philippine Migrant Workers' Day, the DFA said.

"Dubbed 'Philippine Festival in Yeouido,' the day-long cultural fanfare included a housing fair by the Pag-IBIG Home Development and Mutual Fund, a medical mission and onsite services such as counseling for Filipino workers and spouses of Korean nationals," the DFA said.

Travel fair

Meanwhile, as part of ongoing efforts to promote the Philippine tourism market to South Koreans, the Embassy and the Department of Tourism took part in the Korea Travel Fair at the COEX from June 2 to 5.

"With South Korea retaining its position as the Philippines' top source of foreign tourists for five straight years, the Philippine booth highlighted the various sectors that had attracted faithful Korean patrons, from retirement packages to study tours and honeymoon getaways," the DFA said.

The Philippine tourism office coordinated meetings between resort companies from the Philippines and potential buyers from South Korea.

"The buying-and-selling mission at the Millennium Seoul Hilton on June 3 rode on the momentum created by similar missions in the past, all of which had been successful in generating greater tourist traffic and building relevant infrastructure in the Philippines," Ambassador Cruz said.

The Philippine Festival in Yeouido was arranged in partnership with the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the Human Resource Development of Korea, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the Seoul Global Center, and the Philippine Pag-IBIG Home Development and Mutual Fund.

On the other hand, the Filipino Food Festival is done in partnership with the Philippine Department of Tourism, the Millennium Seoul Hilton, Philippine Airlines, and Mama Sita's, a company specializing in food mixes. - VVP, GMA News
