MILAN, Italy – Many business-minded Filipinos in Milan, Italy, are inspired by the story of the only legally existing beauty parlor that is owned and operated by a Filipino couple.

The large cost involved in opening a business did not deter Emmanuel Guaza and his wife, Aileen, from establishing their beauty parlor, Emmanuel and Aileen Parrucchiere and Estetica, at the heart of the fashion city.

There are other equally skilled and competent Filipino hairdressers in Milan, but they operate from home.

While a home-based operation will be less expensive as it will not pay taxes, Emmanuel said it pays to do the business without fear of being apprehended for illegal operation.

He encouraged other hairdressers to follow their footsteps: “Huwag silang tumigil. Alam ko namang nandun na sila... Kung ano ang hinihingi ng Italian government, sundan nila.”

Emmanuel’s skills and talent in hairdressing is admired not only by his Filipino clients but also his foreign clients. Indeed, his Filipino clients do not mind waiting in line for his services – they always come out of the beauty parlor satisfied.

Aurora Lopez, a regular customer, said, “Lagi namang maganda kaya pabalik-balik dito.”

Emmanuel’s close friends said he was born with the talent for hairdressing. He started back when he was in high school, rendering his services for his friends for free.

He was given the break to hone his skills further when he went to Manila and joined the different trainings offered by companies manufacturing hair treatment products.

When Emmanuel came to London, he seized the opportunity for even better training, and in the process became an international hairdresser and businessman.

In the following months, Filipinos in Milan can expect to see branches of E&A Parruchiere operating in the busy streets of the city as the couple plans to have their business franchised.
