PHL envoy Jose Cuisia Jr receives Wharton Award

Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Cuisia Jr. brought new honor to the Philippines as he was awarded with the Joseph Wharton Award for Lifetime Achievement during its 41st Annual Gala Dinner.

“The award recognizes very exceptional leaders who have had an amazing career within the alumni community of the prestigious Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania," the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement.

The recognition was bestowed to Cuisia — the first Filipino recipient of the award — at the Park Hyatt Washington last May 17.

Other recipients included Vulcan Consulting LLC chief executive officer Joyce Hunter, Calvert Group founder D. Wayne Silby, and Active Minds Inc. founder and executive director Alison Malmon, according to the statement.

Cuisia, an alumnus of the Wharton School with a Master of Business Administration in Finance, has been involved in both public and private sectors of the Philippine society.

Notable about Cuisia’s career was when he became governor of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas from 1990 to 1993 and when he sat as president and chief executive of the Philippine American Life and General Insurance Co. or Philamlife in 2000s.

According to the DFA, Cuisia had pledged to “continue serving his countrymen, to whom he has dedicated the recognition bestowed on him."
