MANILA, Philippines — Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and Major League Baseball star Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees have been named as the highest-paid athletes in the world.

In the latest issue of ESPN magazine, said Pacquiao and Rodriguez each earned $32 million in 2010 and the amount doesn’t include “endorsements, appearance fees, sponsorship money and other sources of income.”

Trailing behind Pacquiao and Rodriguez are race driver Kimi Raikkonen ($26,333,333), NBA player Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers ($24,800,000) and soccer idol Cristiano Ronaldo ($19,500,000).

The $32 million came from Pacquiao’s fights with Ghanaian Joshua Clottey in March and Mexican Antonio Margarito in November. Both fights were held before huge crowds at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

Pacquiao is expected to cash in once again as he has a much-publicized fight on schedule on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Promoter Bob Arum said Pacquiao should earn big once again owing to his drawing power.

The purse Pacquiao has earned the past few years have been incredibly awesome considering that when he made his US debut in June 2001, he was only paid a paltry $40,000 as a last-minute substitute against Lehlo Ledwaba.

Pacquiao only barged into the millionaire’s circle in 2005 when he was pitted against Erik Morales of Mexico.

Arum has said that Pacquiao is going to have a few more fights before calling it quits and tops on the list of priorities is a showdown with the elusive Floyd Mayweather.

A fight with Mayweather should shatter all box-office and revenue records in the sport.

Manila Bulletin

World music sensation Bruno Mars, who is half-Filipino, made it to Time magazine’s list of 100 “most influential” people for 2011.

Ranked No. 64, Bruno Mars joins an illustrious list of artists and activists, reformers and researchers, heads of state and captains of industry who have affected people and their views across the globe.

Born Peter Gene Hernandez to a Filipino mother and Puerto Rican father, Bruno Mars is best known for his hit song “Just the Way You Are” for which he won the Best Male Pop Vocal award at the recent Grammy Awards.

His song “Nothing on You” was the Soul Train Awards’ “Song of the Year” for 2010.

Bruno Mars makes Time 100 Bruno, 25, is described by fellow artists as part of the new wave of musicians who can do everything – sing, play, write, produce. “There are a lot of people in this world who can sing and play the piano and guitar. Hell, I sing and play the piano and guitar. But there's something different about Bruno Mars. He has a musicality, a presence in his voice that I've never heard from anyone else,” said B.o.B, a rapper, singer, musician and record producer, quoted interviewed by Time.

“When he performs live, nothing is prerecorded or fudged. It's a straightup, classic performance. That's so rare these days. We needed only two sessions to record "Nothin' on You." But when we perform live is when you really see our chemistry in action.” B.o.B. added.

Other fellow artists who made the Time 100 list with Bruno Mars were Justin Bieber and Glee star Chris Colfer.

...the future of maritime grads

NEDA chief: 'Bright future' for maritime studies graduates

Despite the problems that plague the maritime industry, a Cabinet official has promised a “bright future" for the graduates of Philippine maritime studies as the industry embodies a promising outlook.

In his speech early this week at the Asian Institute of Maritime Studies’ graduation ceremonies, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) director-general Cayetano Paderanga Jr. told graduates the country’s economic gains in 2010 will fortify the maritime sector this year, which in turn will widen their opportunities.

Paderanga also projected a boost in the country’s status as a global supplier of seafarers. “At present, the Philippines is the second top supplier of seafarers in the world with only China ahead of us while India comes third," he said in the speech NEDA released Thursday.

“Future projections indicate that there will be a big rise in demand for seafarers, and the Philippines is trying to keep up with the demand," Paderanga added.

He also expressed optimism in improving the country’s position in the area of shipbuilding, saying the Philippines “is also doing well" in this. Paderanga cited statistics from the Department of Trade and Industry that show the Philippines ranks fifth in the world’s shipbuilding industry — accounting for 2 percent of the total market.

“With good management and skilled human resource matched with capital, technology and global market opportunities, the industry is moving forward to make the Philippines the fourth largest shipbuilding country in the world in the next five to 10 years," he said.

“Have no fear," Paderanga told the graduates. “This global competition can be fun, exciting, and rewarding, too."

Maritime disasters

Challenges however remain, Paderanga noted. “We all know that countless lives have been lost at sea. One of the worst maritime disasters in the country is that of the MV Princess of Stars that capsized off the coast of Sibuyan Island in 2008," he explained.

Other problems include the state of the country’s passenger ships, according to a report on GMA News TV’s “State of the Nation" newscast. In its segment called “GMA News Investigates," the newscast said that the Philippines has turned out to be a dumping ground of the world’s second-hand ships.

Paderanga, on the other hand, said the government is on its way to improving the state of maritime safety and security in the country.

“To avoid sea accidents and to be able to respond to global challenges, we need to address transport safety and security issues in the country, as well as produce competent seafarers," he said.

Paderanga noted measures such as addressing the overlapping and conflicting functions of the transport and other concerned agencies “by restructuring port institutions as well as the rail and air transport organizations."

He said the government also plans to establish “a separate and independent regulator that will have jurisdiction over all airports, seaports and railways.

“To improve the country’s business environment and attract more investors, government with the private sector shall address investor confidence by giving priority to key concerns that includes domestic shipping," Paderanga added. —VS, GMA News

Phl to host Centennial Asiad

The Philippine Star
April 20, 2011

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose Cojuangco Jr. announced yesterday that the country has been awarded the rights to host the 100th year celebration of the Asian Games by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in late November or early December 2013, in what will surely mark an epic milestone in the nation’s sports history.

“This will put the Philippines back in the Asian sports map, if not the world,” said Cojuangco who received the confirmation letter from OCA president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah of Kuwait the other day. “We’ll take the opportunity to showcase our country in this national effort.”

The Asian Games date back to 1913 when Manila hosted what was called the Oriental Olympics, later known as the Far Eastern Games. The Philippines was the prime mover of the event, initially held every two years by turns in Manila, Shanghai and Osaka. There were 11 Games staged until political unrest and wars forced the cancellation of the conclave in 1934.

After World War II, representatives from the Philippines and China conferred to resurrect the Games in 1948. The next year, the Asian Athletic Federation was established in New Delhi and declared the birth of the Asian Games to be held every four years.

In 1951, the first Asian Games were hosted by New Delhi with 489 athletes from 11 participating nations vying for honors in 57 events in six sports, including swimming, athletics, basketball and football. Manila hosted the second Games in 1954. Bangkok has hosted four Games in 1966, 1970, 1978 and 1998. Other hosts were Tokyo, Jakarta, Tehran, Seoul, Beijing, Hiroshima, Busan, Doha and Guangzhou. In 2010, the 16th Asian Games assembled a record 9,704 athletes competing in 476 events in 42 sports in Guangzhou. The next Asian Games will be hosted by Incheon in 2014.

Cojuangco said the Philippines gave up its rights to host the Asian Beach Games in 2013 for the privilege to stage the Centennial celebration.

“We pursued the opportunity to host and fortunately, Sheikh Ahmad gave his go-signal,” said Cojuangco. “Definitely, we’ll use this event to sell our country as a tourist destination. The OCA will hold a General Assembly meeting and we’re thinking of a tourist spot as the venue.”

Cojuangco said given whatever resources are available, a plan will be formulated to list the different sports and cultural events to serve as the highlights of the celebration. “Of course, we’d like to put the events in different provinces so we can showcase as much of our country as possible,” he said. “But that depends on which sports will be played and whether the member countries are willing to play in different provinces.”

Cojuangco said his idea is to calendar representative sports in the events that the OCA sanctions – the Asian Games, Asian Indoor Games, Asian Martial Arts Games, Asian Winter Games, Asian Beach Games, Asian Youth Games and Asian Indoor Martial Arts Games.

“The Olympic compulsory sports will be at the top of the list – aquatics and athletics,” he said. “From the Winter Games, we’ll probably include ice skating. We’ll include taekwondo from the martial arts. Basketball will be in the schedule and maybe, we’ll consider the Youth event of three-on-three. For football, we’ll have fields compliant with FIFA standards by then with a Quezon City turf being put up by FEU and the Rizal Memorial, among others.”

Cojuangco also disclosed a plan to inaugurate an Asian Sports Hall of Fame, honoring the region’s 100 most outstanding athletes in the last 100 years as a feature of the Centennial rites.

Pinoy filmmaker in Cannes Directors' Fortnight

Auraeus Solito's "Busong" is among 21 feature films in this year's Cannes Directors' Fortnight.

The selection was announced on April 19 at noon on its official site.

His fifth feature film, Busong, is the first Palawanon indigenous film. Its title is the Palawan concept of fate or instant karma, and the film focuses on how nature reacts instantly to man's disrespect of nature and other men.

In Busong, Alessandra de Rossi plays Punay, who is born with wounds on her feet and cannot step on the earth.

Her brother, Angkarang, carries her through a hammock, as he searches the changing landscape of Palawan in hopes of finding a healer who can cure Punay.

Different people help him carry his sister along the way – a woman looking for her husband, a fisherman who lost his boat, and a young man who is searching for himself – and each one meets their fate.

Shot in Palawan and written by Kanakan-Balintagos and Henry Burgos, the cast includes Clifford Banagale, Rodrigo Santikan, Bonivie Budao, Vincent Magbanua, Mina Tesorio, and Dax Alejandro.

Artistic director Frédéric Boyer says Busong transcends the border between documentary and fiction.
"The film deals with animism and is very close to nature. It has been shot without any apparent wish to be selected in Cannes or to be picked by a co-producer," he says in his comments on this year's selection.

Solito, though born outside of tribal land, comes from a lineage of Shaman-Kings from the Palawan tribe. He is one of the leading independent filmmakers from the Philippines, and is not new to international acclaim.

His first feature film "The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros" won 15 international awards, and has brought Solito to Montreal, Toronto, Okinawa, Utah, Berlin, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, New York, Las Palmas, Spain, Sydney, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Warsaw, and London.

The feature film was also named one of the Ten Best Films of the Decade (2000-2009) by Gawad Urian.
"Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros" was followed by "Tuli" (2006), "Pisay" (2008) and "Boy" (2009).

Keeping the good news for weeks

Solito was informed that his film was in the selection two weeks ago, but he could not share the news until the selection was officially revealed yesterday.

"It was so hard to keep it for two weeks," said Solito, who was speechless when he first received the good news.

"I was playing Plants vs Zombies when the e-mail came in. My hands were so cold. It was one of those unexpected gifts," he said, adding that his mother had even gone to St. Jude Church to pray a novena.

"I was told that I would be happy for the first three days, after that it's a lot of hard work," says Solito.

He said the team had to get to work immediately in order to meet the technical requirements, since they had submitted a rough cut.

"Ang daming technical requirements. Last week, nag picture lock kami, the other day we were refining the sound mix, next week we'll be doing color correction," he said, adding that with a fifty-percent discount from Roadrunner, the film would meet the deadliest deadline.

"Luckily, I have a very good technical team. I want to prove that we can come up with a world class digital cinema package," he says.

"This is actually my dream film," Solito told GMA News Online.

He said one of the stories in the film was inspired by the tale of a woman searching the forest for the sound of a chainsaw. When his aunt told him the story in 1994, he drew it using stick figures.

"For the first time, I saw the world in frames," he said.

He calls Busong a trilogy within a trilogy. The story based on a Palawan myth of Punay and her brother threads three chapters together: forest, sea and mountain.

"Each chapter contains a busong," Solito said.

Busong will premiere in July in the Directors Showcase of Cinemalaya, which funded the film.

Cannes Directors' Fortnight pays attention to the annual international production of fiction features, short films and documentaries. It is the only section at Cannes that is open to the public. The films selected at the Directors' Fortnight may receive the Camera d'Or prize.

Other Filipino filmmakers who have been featured in the Directors' Fortnight are Raya Martin for "Now Showing" and Brillante Mendoza for "Foster Child." — LBG, GMA News

Pinoy ‘Crooks’ behind hip hop’s fashion scene

04/20/2011

WEST HOLLYWOOD, California -They’re one of the most popular brands in hip hop fashion worn by the likes of Jay Z, Kanye West, Outkast, and Drake. They’re rapped about by Nas.

High-end street fashion brand “Crooks and Castles” is founded and run by Filipinos.

Many of the designs incorporate the gang lifestyle. It was part of their environment growing up in Cerritos during the 80s.

Design Director Emil Soriano said: “A lot of the guys, they go to the gun range and stuff so we try to be relevant with the stuff that we’re into. You know hobbies and what not, and relate it to what we do in the brand.”

"Crooks and Castles" was created by former Marc Ecko designer Dennis Calvero. The name was inspired by hip hop lyrics, and they say it has a deeper meaning as well.

“We started building more meaning towards it like behind every castle there’s a crook. Behind every empire there’s someone that did something dirty to get there,” explained Calvero.

The brand has been around since 2002. Jay Z wore one of their shirts in 2005 and made the t-shirt brand popular. Since then, the brand has been seen on other hip-hop and rap artists like Rick Ross, Drake and Big Boi.

Manny Pacquiao’s co-trainer, Buboy Fernandez, was seen wearing one of their patches.

“They understand the lifestyle we’re talking about, the clothing that we’re displaying so, it’s an amazing feeling especially coming from a minority race in the States and making a name for ourselves,” explained the company’s vice president Bryan Jay Calvero.

Ilocos high school students win in Vietnam choir contest

04/19/2011

MANILA, Philippines - A group of students from the Ilocos Norte National High School (INNHS) made the country proud after emerging as the overall winner in the first Vietnam International Choir Festival and Competition held last month, the Department of Education (DepEd) said Monday.

According to DepEd, the INNHS Samiweng Singers topped more than 30 choirs from 12 countries as the champion and gold awardee in the Children's Music and Sacred Music categories.

Among Samiweng's opponents are choral groups composed of adults such as the chamber choir from Manila, and choirs from Indonesia and Estonia.

"We must agree that Filipino children are imbued with so much intelligence, and it takes a nurturing environment to bring out the best from emerging Filipino talents," Education Secretary Armin Luistro said in a statement.

He added, "Hence, participation in these activities is a perfect venue for young Filipino musicians to showcase their talents and promote what we, as a people, have."

Luistro said children should not just work hard to improve academic performance, but also to develop art skills. This, he said, will help the country to "develop a sense of national identity that will further unite our people."

Samiweng is composed of 26 high school students, mainly from INNHS' special program for the arts and special science class.

The group first won the championship in the 2002 National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA), and was given a break to produce their recording debut 2 years later.

At the first Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Choral Competition held in 2009, Samiweng garnered "Silver A," the second to the highest award given in the said contest.

Meanwhile, other Filipino choral groups that won in the first Vietnam International Choir Festival and Competition include:
  • Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale (Mixed Choir category)
  • San Felipe Chamber Singers (Sacred Choir Music and Folklore categories)
  • Coro San Benildo (Youth Choirs of Mixed Voices and Folklore categories)
  • Polytechnic University of the Philippines Laboratory High School Chorale (Youth Choirs of Mixed Voices category)
  • First Asia Minstrels (Youth Choirs of Mixed Voices category)

MANILA, Philippines - Lambanog, dubbed as the "Philippine vodka," caught the attention of some international stars after it was recently served in an exclusive Hollywood event.

VuQo, the first Filipino vodka brand, was served during the "Wisteria Lane Block Party" held at the set of "Desperate Housewives" inside the Universal Studios in California.

Stars from the hit American television series and other Hollywood actors said they were excited to try the fiery coconut-based liquor, which is endorsed by Filipino bantamweight champ Nonito Donaire.

"I'm not a big drinker, but I will (drink this)," said James Denton of "Desperate Housewives."

Bob Guiney, star of "The Bachelor," for his part said, "Oh, coconut's good. I like that. I bet coconut vodka with some pineapple juice will be delicious. That's what I'll drink tonight."

VuQo was launched in the United States last year, with the product positioned as the Philippines' answer to upscale vodka brand Grey Goose. The company hopes to make lambanog known internationally by serving VuQo in major Hollywood events.

Marikina River used as model for anti-toxic waste campaign

By Alexander Villafania,
loQal.ph
18 April 2011

MARIKINA CITY, METRO MANILA – As part of a global campaign for the World Water Day on March 22, environmental group Greenpeace and several officials of local government units in Metro Manila converged at the Marikina River to issue a call to protect Metro Manila’s waterways from toxic waste.

Marikina River is being used as a “poster child” for the destruction of natural body of water due to industrial, commercial, residential wastes. Several municipalities, including Quezon City and Pasig, share the river for various purposes such as transporting goods to other areas.

The Marikina River is one of the larger waterways that connect to the Pasig River and is also a major tributary of Laguna de Bay, which is also supplies nearby cities with fresh fish.

Clogging of Marikina River due to improper waste disposal is also one of the major causes of flooding during rains as accumulated water spills over low-lying areas in Marikina and other cities.

Greenpeace took some water samples in Marikina River and were labeled with questions like “What’s in the water?” “Who is responsible?” “Who will clean?” “Who will protect?” and “Is this the present? Is this the future?”

In a statement, Greenpeace Southeast Asia Toxics Campaigner Francis Joseph Dela Cruz said taking water samples is symbolic of what the government should do in protecting the country’s waterways from destruction.

He said efforts must be made to clean up rivers from hazardous materials, which is also affecting ecological balance of nearby localities.

“On World Water Day, we are also launching partnerships to advocate for the institutionalization of the community-right-to-know about the composition of industrial effluents into bodies of water.”

“The advocacy calls for the creation of local ordinances that would establish Pollution Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs) in relevant LGUs that would then be able to monitor more efficiently the chemical make-up of emissions coming from industrial establishments into bodies of water,” Dela Cruz said.

Present during the activities were Marikina City Mayor Del De Guzman and Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte.

Fil-Am Hailee Steinfeld plays Juliet, Sleeping Beauty next

By KAYE VILLAGOMEZ
April 17, 2011
Manila Bulletin

MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino-American actress Hailee Steinfeld, who was nominated Best Supporting Actress in the 2011 Oscars, scored two blockbuster-positives as follow-up to her “True Grit” performance. The 14-year old Hollywood upstart will take on the title roles in new “Romeo and Juliet” and “Sleeping Beauty” films.

Steinfeld recently signed on to play “Sleeping Beauty” in another fairy tale given big-screen-spin project. And unlike the comatose princess who practically snoozed off her part while she waited for her prince’s true love kiss and rescue, Steinfeld’s version will be told from Sleeping Beauty’s dream world point of view, Deadline reported.

“Sleeping Beauty” is the third fairy tale granted modern Hollywood angle after “Red Riding Hood” featuring Amanda Seyfried in the title role and two more versions of “Snow White” with Kristen Stewart and Lily Collins each playing the lead in separate adaptations.

Two “Peter Pan” projects and “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” are also underway. Credits are in order for Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” which made over a billion dollars, for this current Hollywood obsession.

For “Romeo and Juliet,” Steinfeld is once again in good company with Italian director Carlo Carlie (of the 1993 crime drama “Flight of the Innocent”) and screenwriter Julian Fellowes (“Gosford Park,” “The Tourist”) who is co-producing the immortal Shakespeare love tale with Garbiel Muccino (director of “Seven Pounds”). New Line Cinema execs-turned-producers Ileen Maisel and Mark Ordesky are also part of the producing cast.

Prior to Juliet, Steinfeld was considered to play Katniss Everdeen in the big screen adaptation of “The Hunger Games.” Ironically, the part went to Oscar batch-mate nominee Jennifer Lawrence, who scored a Best Actress Academy nod for “Winter’s Bone.”

According to http://www.thefablife.com/, Steinfeld resembles Olivia Hussey who played Juliet in 1968. Steinfeld’s age at 14 also matched Juliet’s age in the classic play.

News from The Hollywood Reporter (THR) said $15 million has been allocated for the new “Romeo & Juliet” film. Shooting starts soon in Italy.

“Snow White” actress Lily Collins was at one point certain that she would be this film’s Juliet but found the role of the fair Disney princess more appealing.

Producers of “Romeo and Juliet” have yet to announce who will play Romeo opposite Steinfeld.

Steinfeld – whose maternal grandfather is Filipino – rose to mainstream buzz after her first role as Mattie Ross in “True Grit” received widespread acclaim that critics later referred to the young actress as this year’s Oscar Supporting Actress dark horse before Melissa Leo took home the award for her role in “The Fighter.”

PEZA investments up 20.68% in Q1

By BERNIE CAHILES-MAGKILAT
April 17, 2011

MANILA, Philippines -- Investments registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) grew 20.68 percent in the first quarter this year over the same period last year as more export-oriented enterprises chose to locate in the export zones.

PEZA director-general Lilia B. De Lima told reporters that its total investments haul in the January-March period this year amounted to P34.822 billion or 20.68 percent higher than the P28.854 billion approved in the same first quarter of 2010.

De Lima said these investments represent the combined project costs of 141 export-oriented projects, which are 14.63 percent higher than 123 projects registered in the same period last year.

In terms of direct employment, De Lima also reported that for the January-February period this year there were a total of 792,524 workers in the various ecozones in the country or 23.77 percent more than the 640,322 direct jobs in the first two months of 2010.

In addition, exports in the first two months grew 14.32 percent to $6.721 billion from $5.879 in the same January-February period of 2010.

PEZA has a total of 243 operating economic zones and 2,398 registered enterprises.

PEZA enterprises are entitled to a juicy package of fiscal and tax incentives including income tax holiday of a maximum of eight years and a five percent tax on gross income earned upon expiry of the ITH, among other perks.

For this year, PEZA is targeting P224 billion in new investments or 10 percent higher than its P204 billion total investments in 2010. Employment is also expected to hit 809,239 or 10 percent higher than last year.
For this year, PEZA exports are expected to hit $44.52 billion from $40.473 billion in 2010.

Since 1995, PEZA’s cumulative investments reached P1.724 trillion, generated $400.651 billion in exports and jobs of 792,524.

De Lima said the agency achieved this feat by continuing to attract export-oriented investors to its various economic zones including three government-owned economic zones in Baguio, Cavite and Mactan.
There are now 243 operating economic zones in the various ecozones administered by PEZA’s 537 employes.

De Lima was also positive that despite forecasts of economic slowdown in the region given the impact of disasters in Japan and the ongoing trouble in oil-rich North African countries, the agency can still surpass its growth targets this year for investments, exports and employment.

During the eight month period (July 2010 to February 2011) of the new administration of President Aquino, PEZA has created 19 new economic zones with 109 new export locators and 186 expanding companies for total investments of P138.203 billion. These companies have also generated 95,337 direct employment.
For the same period, PEZA also reported exports of $27.111 billion.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Ambassador Evelyn Garcia broached the idea after visiting Litomerice City, where Rizal's good friend Professor Ferdinand Blumentritt used to reside.

"(Garcia) broached a proposal by the Ayala Foundation to put up a Centro Rizal, which among others will house a collection of Filipiniana books including those dedicated to Dr. Rizal, which (Litomerice Mayor Ladislav) Chlupac found to be very interesting," said the DFA.

"She also cited the possibility of developing Rizal tourism packages to boost tourism between the Philippines and the Czech Republic," the DFA added.

Chlupac happens to be a member of the Knights of Rizal Litomerice Chapter, the DFA noted.

Garcia's visit to Litomerice was her first trip outside of Prague, after her presentation of credentials to President Vaclav Klaus earlier this week.

Rizal and Blumentritt's friendship

During her meeting with Chlupac, she thanked him for his efforts in helping preserve the memory of the friendship between Rizal and Blumentritt in Litomerice.

"For his part, Mayor Chlupac thanked Ambassador Garcia for her visit. He likewise promised to maintain the close friendship between Litomerice and the Embassy," the DFA said.

Chlupac accompanied Garcia in offering flowers at the busts of Rizal and Blumentritt. A tour of the Rizal-Blumentritt Bastion then followed.

Rizal, together with Dr. Maximo Viola, visited the place in 1887 when it was still a town in Bohemia, then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Sister cities

Many Filipinos visit Litomerice which has sister city agreements with Calamba and Dapitan in the Philippines, where Rizal used to live.

Litomerice hosts the Parkany Jose Rizala (Jose Rizal Park) and two other sites where the busts of Rizal and Blumentritt are displayed.

It is also the site of the Rizal-Blumentritt Bastion, which was established in April 2009.

The bastion contains a collection of memorabilia commemorating the friendship between the two men and a number of Philippine cultural items.

It is scheduled to host a Filipiniana exhibition this June.– VVP, GMA News

A nine-year-old Filipino boy is leading a group of child artists in an exhibition spearheaded by the Philippine Consulate General in China’s most populous city, Shanghai.

The "Joint Exhibition of Artworks of Gifted Filipino and Chinese Child Artists," which runs from April 9 to 17, features 42 works of Filipino child artist Hamzah Marbella and 400 selected works of Chinese children, the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila said in a statement over the weekend.

Marbella is "blessed with the technical aptitude that rivals older peers in the art world," the department said.

"As the youngest member of the Art Association of the Philippines, he has been recognized by numerous local and international organizations and is a recipient of more than 50 awards acknowledging not only his impressive technique, but his unique vision as well," it added.

Co-sponsors of the event were the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation, the Philippine Soong Ching Ling Foundation, and Liwayway (China) Co. Ltd.

"The children's works placed side-by-side signifies the unique relationship that the Philippines and China share — a relationship shaped by a common history, extensive people-to-people ties, and ever-growing trade relations," Consul General Charles Jose said.

The exhibition is part of a year of festivities marking the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines launched on June 9, 2010.

During the exhibition’s opening ceremonies, Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation chair Lu Ping said, "The art and culture exchange between our children is the best witness of the friendship between our two countries."

The exhibition at the Children's Palace of the China Welfare Institute also had Shanghai Women's Federation Chairperson Madame Zhang Lili and Liwayway (China) Co. Ltd. chairman Larry Chan as guests of honor.

PHL tuna, pompano fetches $20-M orders from 'Boston Seafood Show'

Fresh chilled tuna and pompano from the Philippines took in $20.196 million (P869 million) in booked orders during the recently concluded International Boston Seafood Show in Boston, Massachusetts, the Agriculture Department said in a statement Sunday.

The booked orders topped by 187 percent the original sales target of $10 million for the Boston event, according to a report by the 14-man Philippine delegation headed by Agriculture Assistant Secretary Salvador S. Salacup, the department said.

The report, submitted to Agriculture Secretary Processo Alcala, noted that “there is still vast opportunity for the expansion of Philippine aquatic resources products considering that many supermarkets and retail stores near the exhibition site sold fish… shrimp, prawns, crabs, tilapia, tuna loins, squids and octopus, which however are currently sourced from Taiwan and China.

The seafood show is one of the best venues to display products of the Philippine seafood industry and further penetrate the US — the 3rd largest consumer of seafood products worldwide, Salacup said. The three-day show was held last March 20-22.

918 exhibitors from 48 countries took part in the event, and about 40 percent were manufacturers. Importers and agents, wholesalers and distributors, retailers and food service businesses also participated in the seafood show, the department said.

The orders booked by the Philippines from the show have encouraged the Agriculture Department to continue supporting the fisheries and aquatic sector, a crucial segment to its export potential, Salacup said. — VS, GMA News
