An owner of a dance company in Cebu won 2014 Miss Earth during grand coronation night held at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City Saturday night.

Jamie Herrel, 20, owner of Mactan Dynamics Dance Company, bested 83 candidates from around the world to capture the Miss Earth crown. This is the second time that the Philippines won in the environment-driven beauty contest.


In 2008, the 14^th Miss World Beauty Pageant saw Karla Henry, to the first Filipina to be crowned Miss Earth.

Other winners in this year’s contest were Miss USA Andrea Neu, who won Miss Earth Air; Miss
Venezuela Maira Alexandra Rodriguez; Miss Earth Water; and Miss Russia Anastacia Westropp, Miss Earth Fire.

Other candidates who finished in the Top 18 semi-finalists were representatives from Tahiti, Korea, Colombia, Scotland, Mongolia, Zambia, Brazil, Slovak Republic, Thailand, Egypt, Mexico and Spain.

Herrel, who stands 170 centimeters and measures 32-25-28 belongs to the Kagandahang Flores beauty camp, describes herself as hyper and adventurous.

She said “the Philippines is absolutely beautiful with their high mountains, blue beaches, their amazing sunsets, big waterfalls, the delicious food, the exotic animals, the hospitable people and so much more. It’s hard to promote one eco-tourism spot because the country itself is absolutely breath-taking and you can never get enough of the Philippines.”

Pinay to represent Canada in 2013 Miss Universe

MANILA -- A former "Pinoy Big Brother" housemate is set to represent Canada in the upcoming 2013 Miss Universe pageant, after being belatedly declared winner in the national competition.

Riza Santos, who represented Calgary in the 2013 Miss Canada pageant, was named first runner-up during the coronation night held Sunday (Manila time).

Candidate Denise Garrido from Bradford was initially declared Miss Universe Canada.

On Tuesday (Manila time), however, pageant organizer Beauties of Canada (BOC) announced that it had erroneously announced the winner and runners-up of the competition.

In the "final results" released on BOC's official website, the organization said Garrido placed 3rd runner-up. Santos, whose parents are both Filipinos, was named Miss Universe Canada 2013.

Offering its "sincere apology" to Garrido, BOC said the "human error [in determining the winner was] discovered while validating the results."

It added: "Beauties of Canada congratulates Riza Santos as the winner of Miss Universe Canada 2013 competition, and looks forward to working with her as she prepares to represent our country at Miss Universe 2013."

The 25-year-old Santos is a veteran pageant contestant, having won two other beauty competitions in Canada -- Miss Earth in 2006, and Miss World in 2011.

Although born and raised in Canada, Santos is pure Filipino. Her father, Ruel Santos, is from Bulacan; while her mother, Dina Buenaventura, hails from Bataan.

In 2007, Santos was among the housemates of the second "Celebrity Edition" of the hit ABS-CBN reality TV show "Pinoy Big Brother."

With an estimated 1.6 million text votes, Santos won second place at the show's conclusion.
Following her stint as a housemate, Santos appeared in several Kapamilya programs, including the concert variety show "ASAP," and TV series like "Palos" and "I Love Betty La Fea."

As Miss Universe Canada, Santos will compete with the Philippines' delegate to the Miss Universe pageant, Ariella Arida, later this year.

MANILA, Philippines – The Czech delegate to the 12th annual Miss Earth pageant bested 80

international candidates as she was crowned winner in Alabang, Muntinlupa City on Saturday.

Tereza Fajksová of the Czech Republic was named Miss Earth 2012 at the coronation night held Saturday night at the Versailles Palace.

The Philippines' Stephany Stefanowitz was named Miss Air (1st runner-up); Venezuela's Osmariel Villalobos, Miss Water (2nd runner-up); and Brazil's Camila Brant, Miss Fire (3rd runner-up).
For the pageant's Question and Answer portion, the Top 4 beauties were asked, "What would you consider as your defining moment as a woman?"

Stefanowitz drew applause for pointing to her fight for the conservation and preservation of the environment, as well as her advocacy for renewable energy. At first admitting she did not understand the question (asked in English), Fajksová, meanwhile, answered that it is everyone's duty to protect and respect Mother Earth.

Miss Earth 2011 Olga Álava of Ecuador awarded the crown to her successor. In turn, an emotional Fajksová took the runway and paraded in her long gown. After falling on her knees from tripping on her gown, Fajksová took no time to stand with aid from her fellow contestant.

Delegates from South Africa (Tamerin Jardine), Russia (Natalia Pereverzeva), Nepal (Nagma Shrestha), and the United States of America (Siria Bojorquez), completed the Top 8 finalists.

Rounding out the victors of the special awards are India's Prachi Mishra for Miss Congeniality; Venezuela's Osmariel Villalobos, Miss Photogenic; and Thailand's Waratthaya Wongchayaporn, Best in National Costume.

Pinay beauty a contender in Teen Earth Girl UK pageant

Jerizza Avancena, a 16-year-old Filipina who has been living in the United Kingdom (UK) since she was a young girl, is one of the candidates for Teen Earth Girl UK this year.

In 2001, when she was only five years old, Avancena migrated to the UK with her parents. They are currently living in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

Avancena excels both in academics and sports.  She is taking up aviation operations at the Leeds Aviation Academy while studying Physics and Maths at another college.

According to the official site of the pageant, Avancena won 2nd place at a seven-school basketball competition in 2010 aside from "many netball tournaments."

In an interview with GMA News Online on Saturday, Avancena said she loves to travel and wants to become a pilot someday.

On her profile on the pageant website, she said: "What's also important to me is that I one day have a loving and happy family of my own along with a successful career as an airline pilot to give them the experiences that I have enjoyed and appreciated throughout my life."

"I would love to learn more languages but as of now, I know how to speak in Tagalog, English, and French. I also know some Spanish and Ilokano. I would like to see more places, experience new things, meet new people and taste new foods from around the world!"

Avancena definitely has not forgotten her Filipino roots. When asked over the phone if she knew how to speak in Tagalog, she replied: "Opo."

When asked if there was a Filipino she looked up to, she said: “Opo, si Shamcey Supsup kasi po yung personality niya is very thoughtful and inspirational. She is also very beautiful.”
 
Supsup was the Philippines' bet in the 2011 Miss Universe pageant where she was declared the third runner-up.

Avancena said: “I like the people of the Philippines. They are not only generous but also very cheerful.”
 
"I went to Tagaytay in 2008 and I really liked the place because it was very beautiful. I also visited the Palace in the sky and it was wonderful,” she said.

Avancena also expressed her gratitude to the Filipinos who are supporting her. “I just like to thank all the people supporting me especially in my hometown in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. I would also like to thank my family and friends,” she said.
 
“Sana po masuportahan niyo ako habang sumasali ako sa pageant at sana makapagdala ako ng karangalan sa Pilipinas at mga kababayan natin,” she added.

 

Asked why she decided to  join Miss Earth Teen UK, she said: “Well, I was surfing the internet and nakita ko siya sa website ng Miss Earth and I thought it was fun so I joined.”
 
She said the difficult parts of preparing for the competition were "dieting and going to the gym."  

"It takes a toll on your body,” she said.
 
On the other hand, she said the fun part of getting ready for the pageant was “shopping for the clothes!”
 
The Miss Earth Teen UK competition will be on September 1 this year.

On the pageant website, she said: “It is our responsibility as habitants of this world to raise awareness to the people in the world.
 
“Without knowledge people can not act and without action, there will be no improvement. Therefore, I believe that it is also our responsibility to raise awareness, preserve and protect the environment in order for us to be able to pass this beautiful world that we take for granted to the next generations to come,” Avancena said.

PH bet finishes 3rd in Miss Earth 2011

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines’ candidate Athena Imperial finished third place at the 2011 Miss Earth beauty pageant held on Saturday.

The 24-year-old Imperial, a native of Casiguran, Aurora, was crowned Miss Water (equivalent to second runner-up).



Imperial was joined by Olga Alava from Ecuador, Brazil’s Drielly Bennettone, and Venezuela’s Caroline Medina in the top 4.

Alava was crowned Miss Earth 2011 by India’s Nicole Faria, Miss Earth 2010 winner.

Brazil’s Drielly Bennettone won Miss Air while Venezuela’s Caroline Medina was named Miss Fire.

The coronation night was held at the University of the Philippines Theater in Diliman, Quezon City.
