Philippines bags 62 medals in 10th IMSO

Filipino elementary students took home 62 medals including three gold in the 10th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for Primary School Students held in the country from Nov. 25 to 29.

The IMSO drew contestants from South Africa, Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, China, India, Nigeria, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kazakhstan, Brunei, Malaysia, and host Philippines.

The country won three gold, 18 silver and 41 bronze medals in the competition organized by Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG) under Dr. Simon Chua and the City of Taguig under Mayor Lani Cayetano in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Science Education Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-SEI).

The mayor and her husband Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, and DOST-SEI Officer-in-Charge Elizabeth Fontanilla led the awarding ceremony held on Nov. 28 at the Samsung Hall of SM Aura Premier at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

In Math, winners of gold medals for the Philippines are Stefan Marcus Ong and Steven Reyes of St. Jude Catholic School and John Henry Marquez of UP Integrated School.

Winner of silver medals in math are Wiliam Joshua King, Matthew Eric Tan, Audrey Sy, Marksen Viktor Lizarondo, Marjana Ysabelle Montanez, Eion Nikolai Chua, Fedrick Lance Lim, Maxinne Louise Dominique Co, Vanessa Ryanne Julio and Patrick Nino Policarpio.

Bronze medalists are Ken Rassel Isidro, Al Patrick Castro, Bryce Ainsley Sanchez, Kylee Wiona Sy, Ryan Jericho Sy, Genrish Wendell Ng, Vincent Paul Fadri, Hanna Jo, Hiraya Marcos, Naomi Anne King, Ma. Erin Daphne Raton, Albriz Moore Bagsic, Robert Gerard Uy, Elean Almazan, Vien Vicente Jio Viloria, Lance Andrei Esteban, Ellan Puerto, Allyana Coleen Reyes, Christopher Neil Defensor and Kristin Angela Narag.

In Science, the Filipino silver medalists are Hugh Angelo Sonon, Jernnex Mullaneda, Neil Joshua Patiag, Dion Stephan Ong, Katrina Laura Colasito, Joseph Ryan Ong, Lyra Winette Tamayo and Neil Martin Cantillana.

Science bronze medalists are Gabrial Joseph Pua, Laila Denise Dy, Sophia Marion Medina, Lance Kendrick Sebastian, John Ian Lenix Hingan, Justin Miguel Quismundo, Sean Marcus So, Jerome Pasia, Kathleen Ann Sison, Martie Angelica Bueno, Aleck Josef Aquino, Ma. Leibniz Charisse Parra, Ayeasha Alea Irabagon, Raymund Carlo Masbano, Joshua Alvarez, Sherwin Adrien Tiu, Monica Panti, Ashley Maive Butcon, Ryan Christopher Deodores, Marc Danielle Bas and Immanuel Josiah Balete.

In Math, Chen Xinyl of Singapore emerged as the overall top scorer while Master Papon Lapate of Thailand was best in exploration and Yu Chi Zhang of Singapore took home the best in theory award.

In Science, Kar Weng Sean Leong of Singapore won as the overall winner and Bowen Jiang of Singapore was best in experiment. Disanayaka Mudiyanselage Sumanasekara of Sri Lanka was best in theory.

Dr. Chua thanked Mayor Cayetano and city government of Taguig, Senator Cayetano and companies for their valuable support to the contest. The 10th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) was sponsored by PhilFlex Electrical Wires and Cables, Phoenix Publishing House, Petron, SM Supermalls, Federation of Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. PH elementary schools win 16 medals in Bulgaria math fest

MANILA, Philippines — With a 16-medal haul, the Philippine elementary mathematics team topped the primary division in the just-ended 2013 Bulgaria International Math Competition (BIMC), held June 30 to July 4 in the Black Sea city of Burgas.

The good news was relayed to the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Sunday by Dr. Simon Chua, president of the non-government Mathematics Trainers’ Guild of the Philippines (MTG) and head of the Philippine delegation to the 29-country contest.

The young Filipino math wizards, mostly students from Metro Manila private schools, bagged three gold, four silver, four bronze and five merit medals in the annual competition. The teams from Vietnam and Thailand placed second and third overall.

In an e-mail, Chua also said that the Philippine high school team bagged a total of 14 medals, but failed to land in the Top 3, where the teams from Japan, Hong Kong and China emerged as champions.

The Filipino medalists in the elementary level were: (Gold) Jinger Chong from St. Jude Catholic School; Shaquille Wyan Que from Grace Christian College; and Vicente Raphael Chan from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School. (Silver) Stefan Marcus Ang from St. Jude Catholic School, Steven John Wang from UNO High School, Jose Ignacio Locsin from St. John Institute in Bacolod City, and Tiffany Mae Ong from Immaculate Conception Academy; (Bronze) Luke Matthew Bernardo from Philadelphia High School, Adam Christopher Chan from Grace Christian College, Ryan Mark Shao from Xavier School, and Eason Wong from Philippine Cultural College.

The merit medal winners were William Joshua King from Bethany Christian School in Cebu City, Anna Nicola Baizas from Philippine Science High School, Jaymi Mae Ching from Jubilee Christian Academy, Alyana Zoie Chua from MGC New Life Christian Academy, and Christopher Jose Carlos from Ateneo de Manila University.

In the high school division, the country’s medals came courtesy of the following: (Gold) Clyde Wesley Ang from Chiang Kai Shek College and Farrell Eldrian Wu from MGC New Life Christian Academy; (Silver) John Thomas Chutak from St. Stephen’s High School, Shawn Gabriel Cabanes from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School and Sedrick Scott Keh from Xavier School; (Bronze) Kelsey Lim and Kaye Janelle Yao, both from Grace Christian College; Andrew Lawrence Sy from Xavier School, Andrea Jessica Jaba from St. Jude Catholic School; Nathanael Joshua Balete from St. Stephen’s High School, and John Aries Hingan from San Beda College-Alabang.

The merit medalists were Genmark Tanno from Southville International School, Joseph Raymond Fadri from Makati Science High School and Andrew Brandon Ong from Chaing Kai Shek College.
The following countries also took part in this year’s BIMC: US, Russia, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia, Iran, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Romania, Taiwan, South Africa, and the Netherlands, among others.

The other members of the Philippine delegation were Director Lolita Andrada of the Department of Education; Director Filma Brawner of the Science Education Institute of the Department of Science and Technology; and Rechilda Villame, Dr. Eduardo dela Cruz, Arvie Ubarro, Isidro Aguilar, Joseph Wee, and Robert Degolacion, all team coaches and MTG officials.

After a six-hour bus trip from Burgas to Istanbul on Friday, the group took a connecting flight to Dubai before returning to Manila the following day.

Filma Brawner feted the students with the Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Award, for exemplary achievement in the fields of science and mathematics.

 

“(It is) never easy to compete with the best of other nations ... Let us prove to the world that we are achievers beyond competitions. You can do this by starting a pathway towards greatness in whatever science and technology field you may choose. Being YES Awardees mean that you are more than capable to do that and I really hope to see you make names for yourselves in the sciences,” said Brawner.
 

She also urged the awardees to maintain their thirst for excellence and said the DOST-SEI shall help them reach their potential.

 

 

The DOST noted this was the first time that the number of YES Awardees reached over 300. The previous high was 297 in 2009.
 

DOST Secretary Mario Montejo lauded the students for their feat - including 171 medalists from Metro Manila alone.

 

 

Fourteen students from Saint Jude Catholic School won 22 medals, while 14 students from Grace Christian College won 21 medals.
 

The students competed in contests in different countries such as Singapore, India, Romania, Malaysia, Argentina, Taiwan and China.
 

In his message, DOST Secretary Mario Montejo congratulated the awardees and expressed optimism in the students’ capability to contribute soon in the science community.
 

“I believe that our talent is far more sufficient to answer the needs of our people, be it of this generation or beyond,” said Montejo.
 

Meanwhile, undersecretary for science and technology services Fortunato dela Peña encouraged the students to help in boosting the country’s drive for more innovations.

 

 

“We believe that Filipinos can make good use of available knowledge, processes, and technologies into creating local innovations that will improve productivity of small and medium based industries, and resiliency of the general population against natural occurrences,” he said.
 

He cited the need for an elite group of scientists, engineers, robotics experts, mathematicians, physicists, and others "who could make science work for the benefit of the 100 million Filipinos.”

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino students won 23 medals during a Math and Science Olympiad in India held last week.

The students bagged one gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze medals at the 9th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary Schools, which drew in 231 contestants from 12 other countries.

"Filipino students have once again shown their excellence in math and science," said Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines.

Rechilda Villame stood in as the delegation's team leader for Math, while Ruthela Payawal was the group's team leader for Science.

The Philippines competed with China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand.

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino students won a total of 125 medals in the 8th Asia Cup Stars of the Olympic Math Contest 2012 recently held in Hong Kong.

In a statement, Mathematics Development Academy of the Philippines executive head Dr. Archival Rodriguez said the Philippine delegation won 14 gold, 52 silver and 35 bronze medals, as well as 24 merit awards in the competition.

Philippines wins 2nd overall, 41 awards in Taiwan math contest

Filipino students won 41 medals and awards and wound up second overall in the elementary division in the Taiwan International Mathematics Competition (TAIMC) 2012 held from July 23 to 28 in Taipei.

The competition had 588 contestants from 28 countries including US, China and Canada, according to Dr. Simon Chua, head of the Philippine delegation and president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG).

The TAIMC had two divisions: the 2012 Elementary Mathematics International Competition (EMIC 2012) and 2012 Invitational World Youth Mathematics Intercity Competition (IWYMIC 2012) for high school.

In the EMIC, gold medalists for the Philippines are Farrell Eldrian Wu of MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig City, Clyde Wesley Ang of Chiang Kai Shek College and Andrea Jaba of Saint Jude Catholic School.

Bronze medalists are Matthew Uy of Xavier School, Christian Philip Gelera of UP Integrated School and Cristiana Marie Calderon of Falcon School.

Wu, Ang, Uy and Gelera of Philippine Team A were declared second overall in the elementary division by winning first runner-up in the team and group contests. China was declared champion while Singapore was second runner-up.

Pinoys Win 17 Math Medals in Romania

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino students won 17 medals and awards including four gold medals, a perfect score and four first-places in two international math competitions in Valcea, Romania.

The Philippines participated in the 15th Clock Tower School Mathematics Contest, held from March 23-25, and organized by Romania’s Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports, Romanian Mathematical Society, Valcea County School Inspectorate and Valcea Teacher Development Centre.

Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild (MTG), which provided the training materials for the Filipino contestants, said the country won four gold medals, four silver medals and one merit award in the Clock Tower contest.

Winning gold medals for the Philippines are Kaye Janelle Yao of Grace Christian College, Czarina Angela Lao of Saint Jude Catholic School, Adrian Reginald Sy of Saint Jude Catholic School, and Jervis Chua of Philippine Cultural College-Main.

Yao also holds the distinction of getting a perfect score to top her year level in the contest. For her feat, she was awarded a gold cup in addition to a gold medal.

Silver medalists are Shaquille Wyan Que of Grace Christian College, Kelsey Lim Tion Soon of Grace Christian College, Hubert Yao of Iloilo Central Commercial School and Himig Marcos of Philippine Cultural College Main. Adam Chan of Grace Christian College got a merit award.

The Philippine team also won in the Blitz contest.

Bagging individual first prizes for the country are Kelsey Lim Tion Soon, Adrian Reginald Sy, Kaye Yao and Hubert Yao.

Second prize winners are Czarina Angela Lao and Shaquille Wyan Que while third prize winners are Himig Marcos and Jervis Chua.

Chua said the chairman of Clock Tower School contest was impressed and amazed by the performance of the Philippine team.

Serving as trainers of the Philippine team are Arvie Ubarro of the Philippine Institute of Quezon City and Josephine Lorenzo Sy-Tan of Grace Christian College.

Besides the Philippines, other participating countries in the contests included Romania, Bulgaria, Indonesia and Moldova. The Philippine delegation arrived in the country last March 27. (Jonathan Hicap)

Filipino high school students won four medals in the inaugural Raffles Invitation Mathematical Olympiad held from Feb. 6 to 11 in Singapore.

The Filipino medalists were headed by Mikaela Angelina Uy, third year student of St. Jude Catholic School, who bagged a silver medal in the contest, which was organized by Raffles Institution, the oldest and one of the prestigious schools in Singapore.

Besides Uy, three other students garnered bronze medals. They are Camille Dee, fourth year student of Immaculate Conception Academy Greenhills; Brandon Chan, fourth year student of Philippine Cultural College-Caloocan; and Ruselle Guadalupe, fourth year student of of Valenzuela Science High School.

The four comprised the lone team from the Philippines.

“We are very happy that all the four won a medal each,” said Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), which took care in training the students.

The Raffles Invitation Mathematical Olympiad was participated in by 100 students from nine countries: Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

Among the contestants, 8 got gold medals, 16 won silver and 36 got bronze.

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines’ math whiz kids harvested a crop of 16 medals, including 5 golds, in the Asia Inter-Cities Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad (AITMO) held in Kavre, Nepal this week.

All the 16 Filipino contestants managed to win a medal each that they brought home when the delegation arrived in Manila yesterday afternoon.

They bagged five gold, seven silver and four bronze medals, enabling the Philippines to wind up second in the individual medal tally.

“Filipino students once again showed their outstanding performance in an international math competition,” said Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines.

Chua said in addition to the individual medals, the three Philippine teams fielded in the tournament also got second place while another placed third in the team contest.

Gold medalists for the Philippines are Deany Hendrick Cheng and Sean Timothy Cheng of Grace Christian College, Reine Jiana Reynoso of Philippine Science High School -Main, Julius Vincent Sy of St. Stephen’s High School and Timothy James Tan of Trinity Christian School-Bacolod.

Garnering silver medals are Nathaniel Ryan Ang of Xavier School, Brandon Chan of Philippine Cultural College-Annex, Sherralyn Bernice Chan of Saint Jude Catholic School, Ethan Riley Chan of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, Rachel Rojo of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, Mikaela Angelina Uy of Saint Jude Catholic School and Keefe Collin Tan of Saint Jude Catholic School.

Bronze medalists are Audrey Celine Lao of Saint Jude Catholic School, Georemie Arrianne Concepcion of Philippine Science High School-Main, Shawn Gabriele Cabanes of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School and Kennichi Tan of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.

Chua said 32 teams from 13 countries competed in the contest. They were from South Korea, China, Thailand, Bulgaria, Indonesia, India, Iran, South Africa, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Philippines and host country Nepal.

BEIJING, China — An 11-year-old Filipino boy defeated 191 students from all over the world to emerge as the individual champion in the four-day World Mathematics Team Championship (WMTC), which concluded here Sunday.

The individual feat of Farrel Eldrian Wu, a Grade 6 pupil of the MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig City, was the “icing on the cake” for the Philippines as its primary school team wound up second place over all in the contests held from November 2-6.

Wu bested competitors from different countries, including the US and China, to win the gold medal in the primary division individual contest held at the Jiuhua Resort and Convention Center, here.

“I dedicate this award to the glory of God and to the Philippines,” Wu said after the awarding ceremony presided over by Quan Lam from the University of California-Berkeley and Zhou Guozhen, co-chairmen of the WMTC executive committee.

The 47-member Philippine delegation broke into loud applause and cheers as the names of the Filipino students were announced as winners.

Besides Wu, two other primary school pupils won gold in the individual contest. They are Clyde Wesley Ang of Chiang Kai-Shek College and Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa of the PAREF Westbridge School in Iloilo City.

Winning individual silver medals are Andrea Jaba of the Saint Jude Catholic School and Sedrick Scott Keh of Xavier School in the primary division, and Ma. Czarina Angela Lao of Saint Jude Catholic School and Raenelle Ean Ngo of Chiang Kai-Shek College won in the middle school division.

The Philippines Team 1 was declared second over all in the primary division team contest. Its members are Wu, Ang, Ildesa, Jaba, Keh, and John Aries Ceazar Hingan of San Beda College-Alabang in Muntinlupa City.

“I never imagined that we would ever beat China and the US in this kind of competition. I’m very proud that our students rose to the challenge and gave an oustanding performance in the contest,” said delegation head Rechilda Villame, executive vice president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines, who were with the students in China with Eugenia Guerra, Nikolai Christian Vasquez and Phoebe Guerra.

Besides Hingan, other individual bronze medalists are: Jan Joshua Cruz of Pasig Catholic College; Christian Philip Gelera , UP Integrated School, Matthew Angelo Isidro, Mikaela Uy, and Austin Chua of Saint Jude Catholic School, Shaquille Wyan Que of Grace Christian College; twin brothers Mark Christopher and Matthew Johann Uy, Aaron Dy and Aldrich Aldwin Mayoralgo, of Xavier School, Karli Ang, Philippine Institute of Quezon City, Michael Brodeth and Marc Patrick Celon. Chinese and American contest organizers lauded the Philippine team in the contest and were very curious as to how the MTG, headed by Dr. Simon Chua and Mrs. Villame, trains students for competitions abroad.

A total of 65 teams joined the contest. They include teams from the United States, host China, the Philippines, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Macau.

His name may not ring as loudly as boxing champ Manny Pacquiao’s or Miss Universe Pageant third runner-up Shamcey Supsup’s but, young as he is, his is definitely an achievement that offers more promise for the country’s future, although it has been much, much less appreciated by his fellow Filipinos.

Adrian Reginald Sy, 14, a first year high school student of St. Jude Catholic School in Manila, scored 100 percent in the 2011 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). He was among the 27 students from nine countries—Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, China and the Philippines—who garnered a perfect score in the annual contest that was participated in by more than 300,000 students from around the world. And it is not the first time he accomplished the feat in an international competition. In July 2010, then 13 years old, he also aced the 14-nation 13th Primary Mathematics World Contest (PMWC).

Even more heartening, Sy is not the only Filipino youngster excelling in such events. In the same 2011 AMC, 10 other Filipino math wizards won Prize awards, and 60 more placed among the top 2 percent of the more than 300,000 participants. In last year’s AMC, Sy was given a Prize award for being among the top 1 percent of over 400,000 participants; four other Filipinos, with identical scores of 9.7 percent, were among the 65 contestants from different countries who topped the event.

“The Philippines continues to do so well in the AMC,” Andrew Byrne, deputy head of mission of the Australian Embassy in Makati City, noted, and commended the awardees for their “mastery of math, the language of modern life.”

However, AMC is not the only international math competition where our numbers aces have stood out. Last month, students from Metro Manila won 14 medals, six of them golds, in the Wizards at Mathematics International Competition (Wizmic) held in Lucknow, India. Earlier, in September, Filipino students bagged 56 medals in the 12-nation 8th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (Imso), sharing top honors with Singapore and Thailand.

This continuing series of achievements in an international arena is obviously not a trend of recent origin. Early last year, the Department of Science and Technology recognized 303 elementary and high school students who, all together, won 450 medals in more than a dozen international math and science competitions in 2009, for bringing honor to the country and exemplary achievement, awarding each of them the YES (Youth Excellence for Science) medal and installing them in the “roster of honorable young men and women.” Then Science and Technology Secretary Estrella Alabastro hailed them as an “overflowing deluge of hope for the Philippines.”

Sy and company’s medals show this deluge surges on to this day. “More and more Filipino math students are getting competitive. We hope they would inspire other kids to do the same, especially those in public schools,” Dr. Simon Chua, president of Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Phils. (MTG), enthused on their AMC awards.

Ironically, the achievements of our numbers aces look more like an exception and all the more stand out because the performance of our students in the Trends in International Math and Science Study (TIMSS) test, which is held every four years by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and conducted by the US-based National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), has been mostly “dismal” and has become “a cause for national shame,” to borrow the words of Butch Hernandez, the executive director of the Eggie Apostol Foundation, whose main advocacy is education reform.

It is noteworthy that the same schools, more or less—like St. Jude Catholic School in Manila, Philippine Science High School in Quezon City, Chiang Kai Shek College, Xavier School, Jubilee Christian Academy, Paref-Southridge, among other schools—are the source of our numbers aces, many of whom are also wards of MTG. This clearly tells us that an effective, quality method of teaching Math is not beyond our reach. The question is, what is keeping our education officials from adopting this model for all our schools?

Filipino teen gets perfect score in 2011 Aussie math contest

MANILA, Philippines – By garnering a perfect score, Adrian Reginald Sy, a high school freshman from St. Jude Catholic School in Manila, has aced the 2011 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC).

This was announced on Monday night by Prof. Peter Taylor, executive director of the Australian Math Trust, which runs the annual contest, during the AMC awarding rites at the Century Park hotel, also in Manila.
Sy, 14, was one of only 27 students worldwide who scored 100 percent in this year’s AMC, according to Taylor.

The other perfect scorers are from Singapore, 8; Taiwan and Hong Kong, 5 each; Bulgaria, 3; Indonesia, 2; and Malaysia, Australia and China, one each.

For his feat, Sy won an AMC medal and a Peter O’Halloran certificate.

In 2010, Sy won a Prize award for scoring 99.7 percent in the same correspondence-type contest.

When interviewed, Sy described the AMC as “tough,” noting “on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the toughest, it’s a 7.5.”

Aside from Sy, 10 other young Filipino numbers aces are Prize awardees this year: Audrey Sy, Jinger Chong, Matthew Angelo Isidro, Andrea Jaba, and Seanne Daphne Ng, all from St. Jude Catholic School; Andrew Lawrence Sy from Xavier School; Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa from Paref-Westbridge School; Justin Yturzaeta from Jubilee Christian Academy; Sterling Alvin Tiu from St. Stephen’s High School; and Henry Jefferson Morco from Chiang Kai Shek College.

Sixty other Filipino students were among the “Top 2 Percent” of over 300,000 students in 40 countries who took part in the competition.

They include, among others, Clyde Wesley Ang from Chiang Kai Shek College; Dion Stephan Ong from Ateneo de Manila University; Belinda Corinne So, Austin Edrich Chua, Matthew Ryan Tan and Hans Leighton Liu, all  from St. Jude Catholic School; Mario Antonio Ongkiko, Ryan Shao and Ethan Chua, all from Xavier School; Jesse Yu Gaw from UNO High School; Juan Pablo Abola from Paref-Southridge School; Miguel Bradford Lao from Philippine Cultural College; Rajo Christian Cadorna from Puerto Princesa Pilot Elementary School; Jasper John Segismundo from Pasig Catholic School; Manuel Vito Ortiz from Solomon Integrated School-Iloilo; and Jose Ignacio Locsin from St. John’s Institute.

Some 3,650 primary and secondary students nationwide participated in the competition, held simultaneously on August 4.

The contest was conducted here by AMC representatives in coordination with the DOST’s Science Education Institute and the non-government Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Phils. (MTG).

Dr. Simon Chua, MTG president, described as “encouraging” the country’s performance in this year’s AMC.
“More and more Filipino math students are getting competitive. We hope they would inspire other kids to do the same, especially those in public schools,” Chua said. Most of the local AMC contestants are wards of MTG.

Andrew Byrne, deputy head of mission of the Australian Embassy in Makati City, cited the Filipino awardees for their “mastery of math, the language of modern life.”

Byrne observed that “the Philippines continues to do so well in the AMC.”

The University of Canberra-based AMT limited the first AMC, held in 1976, to Australian students. Two years later, students from New Zealand were allowed to join the contest.

Since 2005, the AMC has spread to 40 nations worldwide.

The contest paper consists of 30 multiple choice questions, which are ordered in increasing difficulty. In the AMC, students are given 75 minutes to solve the problems, which cover arithmetic, algebra, geometry and problem solving.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines placed second in the overall ranking in the Wizards at Mathematics International Competition (WIZMIC) held in Lucknow, India, on Oct. 21-24. Filipino students reaped awards in the individual and team contests, Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), said Monday.

In the overall ranking, Philippines Team B emerged second. The team was composed of Xavier Jefferson Ray Go of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Miko Johnson Ong Co of St. Stephen’s High School; Jasper John Segismundo of Pasig Catholic College, and Cristiana Marie Calderon of Falcon Learning Center. Indonesia Math Ed Clinic Team D came first.

In the individual contest, Filipino students bagged six gold, four silver, and four bronze medals.

The Filipino gold medalists are Gene Go Jr. and Xavier Jefferson Ray Go of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Raphael Villaluz of San Beda College, Alabang in Muntinlupa City, Cary Albert Chan of St. Jude Catholic School, Miko Johnson Ong Co of St. Stephen’s High School, and Jasper John Segismundo of Pasig Catholic College.

Silver medalists are Terence Brian Tsai of Chiang Kai Shek College, Cristiana Marie Calderon of Falcon Learning Center, Mikhaela Marie Diaz of Special Education Center for the Gifted, and Ezzekiel Young of Jubilee Christian Academy.

Winners of bronze medals are Lou Irish Gonzales of Pasig Catholic School, Anica Clarice Antonella Galano of St. Paul College-Pasig, Angelika Joie Tagupa of Colegio San Agustin-Makati, and Andrew Vince Lee of Xavier School.

In the team contest, Philippines Team B won first place and Philippines Teams C and D won second place and Philippines Team A won third place. RP Team D included Tofelle John Jipos of Pasig Catholic College, and Neil Joshua Patiag of Special Education Center for the Gifted.

Dr. Chua said 39 teams from nine countries joined the contest. Participating countries are China, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh, South Africa, Sri Lanka, host India, and the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines — The medal haul of the Philippines in the most prestigious mathematics and science competitions in the world continued as four high school students bagged gold, silver and bronze medals in the recently-concluded 5th International Earth Science Olympiad, the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DoST-SEI) disclosed Thursday.

Bringing honor and pride for the Philippines from Modena, Italy where the competition was held were gold medalist Williard Joshua Jose of Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Main Campus, silver medalists Christoper Jan Landicho of PSHS Bicol Region Campus and Charles Kevin Tiu of St Jude Catholic School in Manila and bronze medalist John Allan Olesco of Aquinas University Science High School. Jose earlier won a silver medal in last year’s IESO held in Nigeria.

The winning team was mentored by Prof. Miguel Cano of Bicol University and Dr. Marietta de Leon with PSHS Main Campus Director Dr. Helen Caintic acting as an observer.

IESO, held September 5-14, 2011, is the premiere international earth science competition for secondary school students, 17 years old and below. It was the first time that the competition was held in Europe and in Italy. The Philippines hosted the IESO in Bicol in 2008.

The competition covers areas such as astronomy, geology and geophysics, atmospherics and meteorology.
DoST-SEI Director Dr. Filma G. Brawner extended her congratulations to the team, urging them to venture into science careers.

“The IESO is a good starting point for students to look at the earth from a different point of view and explore it. There is still so much more to be discovered and we are hopeful that the IESO winners will take the lead in looking for new information about the world we live in,” Brawner said.

Brawner said contests, such as the IESO, is a good venue for students to be competitive and to excel in the fields they want to pursue.

“Competitions make pupils go beyond what they learn inside their classrooms. With time pressure incorporated in competitions, students are trained to work with grace under pressure. But, more importantly, exposure to international competitions should translate into entry into science careers,” she said.

Brawner said that beyond the medals, math and science competitions also raise public awareness on how science affects lives and moves the country forward.

“The IESO is intended to raise student interest in and public awareness of earth science, to enhance earth science learning of students, and to identify talented and gifted students in earth science,” she said.

Cano, meanwhile, expressed its gratitude to Philex Mining Corporation, Rapu Rapu Polymetallic Project, Geological Society of the Philippines, Hope Christian High School, Bureau of Mines and Geo-sciences, Department of Environment and Natural Resources; Vibal Publishing House; and APO Central Italy for making possible the trip of the team to the contest venue.

The Department of Education (DepEd) in Makati City reported that several students in the city recently garnered top spots in international academic competitions.

In a news release published on the Makati City government website, DepEd Makati Superintendent Elena Ruiz said the distinctions won by bronze medals won by the following students:

Jannylie Suhayne Cayabyab of Makati Science High School (MSHS) in the 2011 China Primary School Math Olympiad in Beijing;

Joshua Padua of Fort Bonifacio Elementary School III in the 2011 International Mathematics Competition in Singapore;

John Angel Aranas of MSHS in the Hua Luo Geng Golden Cup Mathematics Contest, Hui Zhou, China;

Raymond Joseph Fadri of MSHS in the Indonesia International Mathematics Contest in Bali;

Mikael Adriane Ochiai of MSHS was the top scorer, individual category in the American Regions Mathematics League in Las Vegas, Nevada, and

Maria Lorena Tabao earned a Certificate of Merit in the 2011 International Mathematics Competition in Singapore.

Meanwhile, a public school student from Makati City won a silver medal in the recently concluded 8th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad in Naga City in the Philippines.

Patrick Allen Tañada, a freshman of Makati Science High School, was among 30 math and 36 science contestants qualified to represent the country.

“The outstanding achievements of students from the city’s public schools are gratifying to us. Tañada and his fellow representatives had received intensive training by the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild of the Philippines (MTGP).

Last year, Tañada also did the city proud after being named one of the recipients of the Certificate of High Distinction Award in the upper primary division of the 2010 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC).

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino students representing the country bagged a total of 56 medals in the recently concluded 8th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for Primary Schools in Naga City, Camarines Sur.

Dr. Simon Chua, IMSO chief organizer and president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), said this is the "best showing of the Philippines" since the country participated in the event.

The Philippine team won 6 gold medals, 12 silvers and 38 bronzes in the contest, which was held from September 2 to 6.

Farrell Wu of MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig won as Champion in Theory in Math while Raphael Villaluz of San Beda College-Alabang emerged as Experiment Champion in Science.

Two students from Singapore won as overall champions in math and science. The Southeast Asian city-state won 6 gold and 6 silver medals.

Other big winners include Thailand (6 golds, 13 silvers and 4 bronzes), Indonesia (3 golds, 4 silvers and 7 bronzes) and China (3 golds, 4 silvers and 3 bronzes).

A total of 268 contestants joined this year's IMSO. Other participating countries include South Korea, Iran, Malaysia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, India and Taiwan.

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino students continue to do well at international mathematics competitions.

The latest victory was achieved by 6 Filipino students who bagged the silver and bronze medals in the Hua Luogeng Golden Cup Youth Math Invitational Competition in Huizhou City, Guangdong province, China.

Adrian Reginald Sy, a Grade 6 student of St. Jude Catholic School, brought home the lone silver medal at the contest, said Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG).

The bronze medals were won by Kelsey Lim Tiong Soon (Grade 6, Grace Christian College), John Angel Aranas (1st year, Makati Science High School), James Daniel Cordon (1st year, Philippine Science High School-Main), John Thomas Chuatak (1st year, St. Stephen’s High School), and Matthew Ryan Tan (1st year, St. Jude Catholic School).

Six hundred students from China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Mongolia, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines participated.

The other members of the Philippine team are Engelberg Jeremy Sy (Jubilee Christian Academy), Lou Irish Gonzales (Pasig Catholic College), Gabrielle Anne Gabaton (Pasig Catholic College), Jason Carlo Carranceja (Grace Christian College), Andrew Vince Lee (Xavier School), and Christopher Banzon (Nemesio Yabut Elementary School).

The contestants from the Philippines were trained by the MTG.

All the overall awards were won by host country China. Its Beijing Star team was named overall champion, while its Chang Chua Team and Shanghai Team placed first runner-up and second runner-up, respectively.

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino high school students representing the country bagged 3 bronze medals at the 52nd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Amsterdam this month.

Henry Jefferson Morco of Chiang Kai Shek College and Vance Eldric Go and Carmela Antoinette Lao, both from St. Jude Catholic School, won the medals at the prestigious math contest.

Their victory represents the highest medal haul of the country ever since it joined the IMO in 1988.

Prior to this, the highest medal haul the Philippines got at the IMO was recorded in 1991, 2 bronze medals and 1 honorable mention bagged by Wyant Chan, Wilbin Chan, and Jose Ernie Lope, who headed this year's Philippine Mathematical Olympiad (PMO).

The 2011 Philippine team to the IMO was led by Dr. Julius Basilla and Glen Mackenzie Ong from the Mathematical Society of the Philippines.

Because of the Philippine team's performance in IMO this year, the country's standing in the contest went up to 54 from 74 in 2010 out of 101 countries.

Scores

Morco got the highest score among the members of the Philippine team, garnering 20 points. He ranked 171st among 564 participants in the contest.

Go and Lao scored 19 and 17 points, respectively. Go landed at 186th, while Lao placed 222nd.

Lao previously won a bronze medal in the 2009 IMO, and a silver medal in the 2010 IMO.
Morco, meanwhile, was given honorable mention in the 2010 IMO in Germany.

Kenneth Co of Philippine Science High School Main Campus, another Philippine team member, got 12 points and ranked 321st in this year's IMO.

Dr. Filma G. Brawner, director of the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), congratulated the team for their victory.

“In our 23 years of participation in the IMO, we have gathered two silvers, 11 bronze medals and 13 honorable mentions. Our performance is improving as well and we are optimistic that we can get even better in the coming years,” Brawner said.

She added that DOST-SEI will continue to support the IMO and PMO so talented students can have an avenue to improve their skills and test them against those of students abroad.

“We shall continue to be on a lookout for young science and mathematics human resource that in the future will be part of our science community and bolster it with exemplar research and development,” Brawner said.

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino students from various schools in the country bagged 14 medals in the recently concluded Indonesia International Mathematics Competition (IMC) held in Bali, Indonesia.
Gene Go Jr. of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School and Grade 5 student Errol John Suarez of Bicol University-Legaspi City won gold and silver medals, respectively.

HONG KONG – At age 11, Farrell Eldrian Wu can be considered a veteran “mathlete” or mathematics athlete.
 
Farrell, a Grade V pupil at MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig City, has been competing in international math competitions since 2009, when he was just in Grade III.
 
He is the youngest member of the Philippine delegation that won 11 awards in the 14th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest (PMWC) held here from July 13 to 17.

Farrell shone brightest for the delegation by taking the gold medal in the individual contest.

“I’m very happy. I really love math,” he said after receiving his award. The boy has already collected five gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals in international tournaments.

Elaine Wu, Farrell’s mother, said besides having an immense interest in math, her son is also a piano prodigy. The Wu couple was here to support their son.
 
Dr. Simon Chua, head of the delegation and president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), said Filipino students had a rich harvest of awards in the individual and team competitions.

Winning silver medals in the individual contest are Andrew Lawrence Sy of St. Jude Catholic School, Clyde Wesley Ang of Chiang-Kai-Shek College, Jasper John Segismundo of Pasig Catholic College, and Gen Mark Tanno of Southville International School and Colleges.
 
Winning bronze medals are Andrea Jaba of St. Jude Catholic School, Juan Mario Luis Esplana of Elizabeth Seton School-South, and Jimuel Lara of UP Integrated School.

In the team competition, the Philippines’ Team A, composed of Frederick Matthew Corpuz of Colegio San Agustin-Makati, Sedrick Scott Keh of Xavier School, Andrea Jaba of St. Jude Catholic School, and Andrew Brandon Ong of Chiang Kai Shek College won second runner-up.

The Philippines’ Team D bagged two merit awards in the overall performance and in the team competition. The team is composed of Ethan Zachary Chua of Xavier School, Farrell Eldrian Wu, Clyde Wesley Ang, and Andrew Lawrence Sy.
 
Completing the delegation are Ramon Galvan III, Iloilo Central Commercial High School; Xavier Jefferson Ray Go, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Patrick Allen Tañada, Pembo Elementary School (Makati); and Raphael Villaluz, San Beda College-Alabang in Muntinlupa.
 
This year’s Po Leung Kuk contest drew 44 teams from 15 countries and territories: The United States, Russia, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, India, South Africa, Bulgaria, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The other team leaders and deputies of the Philippine delegation are Professor Rechilda Villame, MTG executive vice president; Dr. Leticia Catris, Director III of the Department of Science and Technology’s Science Education Institute (DoST-SEI); Ma. Luisa Villano, admissions officer for Higher Education of Miriam College; Dr. Eduardo de la Cruz Jr., dean of the School of Education of Arellano University; Eugenia Guerra, MTG secretary; and Manuel Kotah, MTG coordinator; Jay Sacay.
 
The Philippine delegation was scheduled to arrive in Manila last night.
