03/28/2014

SPAIN – A Barcelona-based Filipina teenager is making a name for herself in Spain after her first single "Sha la la" was a hit in radio and television programs.

Maria Sagana continues to receive good reviews in Spain after her single landed on the Top 40 Music Charts and is steadily competing with well-known local and international artists.

"Ang sarap ng feeling na marami akong nare-receive na support from both Filipinos at Spanish. It really makes me strong. Imagine, yung biggest radio station, 40 Principales, they are promoting my music! And I am in many different write-ups sa Spanish press. Nakakatuwa!” she said.

Her video teaser received more than 50,000 views on its premiere.

She has been invited to attend a TV series premiere night and an artist's photo shoot. She has even flown all the way to Madrid for press interviews and meetings with production people, who want to get to know the girl and the talent behind the success of "Sha La La".

"I'm so happy to release my first single kasi di ba mahirap sa music industry ngayon. Sometimes you're up, sometimes down. Kaya I'm so happy na nabigyan ako ng break," she added.

Sagana has just turned 16 years old. She attends high school and combines academic studies with her voice lessons.

She started taking up singing lessons when she was 9. Her sister, Jackie Sagana, a music artist and composer herself, is her prime inspiration and model.

Jackie used to have her own music group and so her sister grew up tagging behind her in concerts, rehearsals, jam sessions with friends and families.

"I practically grew up with karaoke filling my home," the girl said.

Sagana is also active in school programs and activities in the Filipino community.

At the age of 14, she already caught the eye of some music and TV producers as her first song “Ready to Love” released via iTunes, was played several times as background song in a famous Spanish TV series.

...the Pinay behind Malaysia's jingle

Voice behind Malaysia’s tourism jingle is Pinay

Kuala Lumpur – Many Pinoys can recognize the tune of the tourism jingle – Malaysia, Truly Asia – played many times on cable television. But not many know that the voice behind it is a Filipina singer who has become a Malaysian citizen. And fewer people know that she is one of the many Filipinos abroad who had led fund-raising campaigns to help the victims of super-typhoon “Yolanda.”

She is Maria Jazsmine, who remains a Filipino at heart. After leading a fund-raising campaign for the victims, she is now planning to establish a library for the children of Tacloban, one of the hardest hit areas.

“I’ve always said that we must not forget about the Philippines. We are still in the period of recovery,” Maria said in a media interview in Kuala Lumpur.

Raising Funds

“I’m in the midst of collaborating with many kind-hearted people who want to raise more funds for typhoon Haiyan. And I am so blessed to meet them after I spearheaded the ‘Artists United for Typhoon Haiyan’. I think we have raised more than a million for Tacloban,” the singer said.

Starting A Library

“Hopefully I would get the support of the government, or the private sector, or an NGOs to start a library in Tacloban. There are people who are willing to reach out and do more for our country,” she added.

While she appreciates the outpouring of aid to typhoon-hit Philippines, Maria Jazsmine pushed for the healing of the communities “as best as we can.” She admitted that one of her advocacies is protecting the welfare of orphan children.

Malaysia Tourism’s Voice

Maria Jazsmine put a voice to “Malaysia, Truly Asia” as part of the worldwide marketing campaign of Malaysia in 1999. Recently, she put a voice to “Heart of Blue,” another tourism campaign of the Malaysia Tourism Board.

Maria Jazsmine admitted that she is “flattered and honored” to sing the Malaysian tourism song that has been widely featured on CNN.

She recalled that she sang “Malaysia, Truly Asia” from the heart since Malaysia is home to different people and cultures.

“I really love Malaysia because they’ve been really good to me,” she said.

“I was easy to relate and to give the feeling of how Malaysia can really be ‘Truly Asia’. It’s multi-cultural, different religions, so it’s so colorful. I have to bring that out in my voice,” she added.

To date, Malaysia continues to use the popular jingle and its other versions to attract tourists.

Humility

Maria Jazsmine, also a ballet dancer, also revealed that she has been able to easily adjust to life in Malaysia mainly due to humility and an understanding of other people’s culture.

“I always believe that service starts with humility. When you humble yourself and just be true to yourself, the doors will open,” she said. “If you want to have peace, you just have to understand and tolerate,” she added.

...the most powerful man in Asian MMA

Victor Cui The most powerful man in Asian MMA is a Filipino

By Randy Caluag
October 27, 2013

With barely two years old in existence, the One Fighting Championship is now widely regarded as the best and largest mixed martial arts organization in Asia.

So why has ONE FC become a byword in the Asian mixed martial arts community?

Khim Dima of Cambodia pummels Filipino Rene Catalan on the back of his head in the recent ONE FC Total Domination in Singapore. Their flyweight bout was ruled a no-contest due to illegal blows.
Khim Dima of Cambodia pummels Filipino Rene Catalan on the back of his head in the recent ONE FC Total Domination in Singapore. Their flyweight bout was ruled a no-contest due to illegal blows.

This is simply because One FC has brought together the best fighters in Asia and the world, pit them against each other in well-balanced cards to come up with high-octane, colorful fight promotions to the delight of the fans in the Asian continent.

The result is a 90% percent market share in terms of fan following in Asia—one billion plus viewership in the first three quarters of the year and an unprecedented ten-year TV deal with Fox and Star Sports for a coverage that spans 70 countries around world.

There is no doubt that ONE FC is MMA’s real deal in this part of the world.

And behind the powerful brand is a young visionary in Victor Cui, who was recently recognized by USA Today as the most powerful man in Asian MMA.

Filipino CEO

The 42-year-old Victor, ONE FC’s chief executive officer, is a pure-blooded Filipino but who has made himself a citizen of the world.

Victor’s father is a Cebuano and his mother is from Camiguin Island, but , Victor was born in Canada and spent part of his childhood in Africa because of his father’s work as an engineer diplomat.

After finishing his degrees in Business and Politics, he took up executive masters in Luxury Branding.

His educational background led him to the exciting world of sports marketing, where he handled various executive positions at ESPN Star Sports, PGA Tour, X Games Asia, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics for 15 years. He has traveled extensively and has made Singapore his home where ONE FC is based.

The rich experience has served him in good stead in founding ONE FC and making it the fastest growing promotion in MMA history.

One FC has so far staged live competitions in Indonesia, Philippines,Singapore and Malaysia and had attracted television audiences not only in Southeast Asia, but to as far as China, India, Russia and the Middle East because its promotions feature top fighters from various Asian countries.

And with still three months to go before the year ends, ONE FC has already breached the one-billion barrier in TV viewership.

Fastest-growing sport
Of all sports, why MMA?

“MMA is the fastest growing sport. Its skyrocketing popularity is phenomenal. It’s hard to resist such kind of business opportunity,” Victor told the Manila Standard in a one-on-one interview.

“While other sports struggle to fight decline, MMA is exploding.”

Repucom.com, a sports-dedicated website, verifies Victor’s claim.

According to its study, MMA is now ranked third behind football and Formula One among the sports which drew the fans’ highest level of interest, surpassing more established sports events such as golf, rugby and Moto GP.

As a testament to MMA’s powerful presence in Asia, Fox and Star Sports recently signed a 10-year coverage deal with ONE FC. Even big sponsors like oil giant Petron and Japan’s Sony, have recognized the marketing viability of the sport that was once held underground.

Mainstream media such as CNN and BBC have also featured fighters from ONE FC. “My success principle is about going for the best. I work with the best people and treat them well—the best gym partners, best fighters, best staff and all.”

Best in the world

ONE FC CEO Victor Cui announces the year-end promotion in December

Victor however thinks of ONE FC as not just a fight organization.

“We’re not just a foreign company that goes to one country and take all the fans’ money. We want to be the platform for growth of the sport and the athletes. One FC is a media company. But first,we are creating the brand. We’re building heroes, superstars. Our dream is to become the best media company in the world.”

Despite the lofty goals that he has set for ONE FC, Victor does not forget his Filipino lineage. He takes pride in the Filipino warrior’s heritage, and this is why in every ONE FC event, there are always Filipino fighters seeing action. He has so much faith in the Filipino fighters even as they keep on losing in the circular cage of ONE FC tournaments.

“I do not just look on winning or losing. It’s about how they fight in the cage. How they excite the fans. Most Filipino MMA fighters like to fight the way Manny Pacquiao fights. That’s why fans love them. That’s what make ONE FC exciting,” explained Victor.

“But Filipinos fighters have to train harder and continue to learn. Everybody is learning fast. The level of competition is rising along with the popularity of the sport.”

Baguio City-based Team Lakay, for instance, is one of the mainstays in ONE FC. In fact, former featherweight champon Honorio Banario and veteran Eduard Folayang, both coming off disappointing losses, are coming back to the cage on Dec. 6 for the ONE FC Moment of Truth at the Mall of Asia.

Banario, a multi-title wushu athlete, wants to take back the title from Japanese Koji Oishi who knocked him out in their previous title duel last May, also held at the MOA Arena.

It’s the ONE FC’s year-ending event that Victor wants to end with a bang. For Victor, the Philippines remains the fight capital of Asia. And no one seems to argue.

After all, he just happens to be the most powerful man in Asian MMA, bar none.

MANILA – Quezon City is home to two of the country’s top universities and some of the metro’s biggest malls.

An online travel magazine, however, noted that the city also has the world’s best looking men -- probably a nod to the city's tagline as the "City of the Stars," given that the country's two largest TV networks are based in Quezon City.

Early this month, Traveler’s Digest released the 2013 edition of its “Cities with the World’s Best Looking Men” list, which placed Quezon City at No. 7.

The online magazine singled out hunk actor Dingdong Dantes as it mentioned how the city has “head-turning beach bodies.”

“Their reputed romantic side and gloriously tanned skin doesn’t hurt either. Just check out much-loved Filipino actor Dingdong Dantes,” it said of Dantes, who is listed in Wikipedia as born in Quezon City.

Dantes was included in E! Entertainment television’s 25 sexiest men in the world list in 2008, along with football superstar David Beckham and actor Gilles Marini of France.

Traveler’s Digest declared Havana, Cuba as the No. 1 city in the world with the hottest men, citing their “golden skin, dark eyes and a rich, exotic accent.”

Landing in second place is Madrid in Spain, followed by Istanbul in Turkey, Miami in the United States and San Juan in Puerto Rico.

At sixth place is Freetown in Sierra Leone, while Cannes in France ranked eighth. Seoul in South Korea made it to ninth place, while Dublin in Ireland rounded out the Top 10.

Staff members of Traveler’s Digest said they “literally scoured the globe in search of the world’s best looking men” as they compiled the 2013 list.

MANILA - Filipino Jonathan Allen Yabut won the first season of the business reality show "The Apprentice Asia."

Yabut, a senior product manager of a pharmaceutical company in the Philippines, was chosen by AirAsia's Tony Fernandes as his apprentice over Singaporean lawyer Andrea Loh Ern-Yu, as seen in the the final episode of "The Apprentice Asia" aired on AXN on Wednesday night.

"Jonathan Yabut, you are hired. Congratulations," Fernandes told Yabut.

"You are a junior me in the making. The whole of the Philippines should be very, very proud of you. Welcome to the AirAsia family," he added.

"I think I'm exploding right now and there's so much happiness in me," Yabut said, adding, "I'm gonna make big changes in the world."

In the two-part finale which was first aired on July 24, Yabut and Loh were given their last task of organizing a black tie event for AirAsia Foundation.

Humble beginnings

A University of the Philippines graduate, Yabut said he has been a fan of "The Apprentice" since he was in college.

The 27-year-old talks freely about his humble beginnings.

"I'm pretty much a self-made man. I went through preparatory school to college all through scholarships. I'm not saying these things because I want your pity but because I made it big, sir, without anything else. And that's something I'm very proud of," he told Fernandes.

Yabut said he wants to be an inspiration for his fellow Filipinos.

"When I wear this Filipino flag pin, it's not because I'm too nationalistic. It's because I want to serve as that inspiration to the rest of my country that there is hope, that I represent that hope in them, sir.

That despite the fact that you may be from poor beginnings, you can make it big," he said.

The advisers of Malaysian business mogul Fernandes -- AirAsia Group Head of Commercial Kathleen Tan and Tune Hotels Group CEO Mark Lankaster -- were all praises for Yabut.

Yabut told ABS-CBNnews.com and other members of the media during the premiere screening of "The Apprentice Asia" last May that he did not feel the pressure of competing with older and more experienced players.

"There were both immature and mature people in the show. And since you’re from different backgrounds, you really tend to compromise. So I think the age didn’t really matter at all. You wouldn’t even know what the ages of the people are until you ask,” he said of his fellow competitors, which included a business owner, a financial coach and an auditor, among others.

He hoped to show the rest of the world that Filipinos can do well, particularly in terms of sales and marketing.

After winning the business reality show, Yabut said he plans to make big changes in the world.
"It's cliché to say na maiiyak ako pero this is it. It took me the next day to sink in na ako na ang unang Apprentice Asia," he told ABS-CBN News.

Food and beverage consultant Celina Le Neindre, the other Filipino finalist in "The Apprentice Asia," earlier said in an interview that Filipinos can expect to see "a lot of Pinoy pride moments" in the finale of the business reality show.

MANILA – Jonathan Allen Yabut, a senior product manager of a pharmaceutical company in the Philippines, is only a step away from becoming the first winner of the reality series “The Apprentice Asia.”

Yabut made it to the Top 2 of the regional adaptation of the popular US series, along with lawyer Andrea Loh Ern-Yu of Singapore.

In a two-part finale which will be aired on the cable channel AXN at 9 p.m. on July 24 and 31, AirAsia’s Tony Fernandes will decide who between the two candidates will become his first “apprentice.”

Yabut is one of the two Filipinos who competed in “The Apprentice Asia.” The other is Celina Le Neindre, a food and beverage consultant, who only made it to the final six in the competition.

A University of the Philippines graduate, Yabut said he has been a fan of “The Apprentice” ever since he was in college.

“I was jumping up and down! Sabi ko sa brothers ko, ‘it’s here, may ‘Apprentice Asia!’ I was telling the other contestants [that] if there was a fan club in Asia, I think I would vie for the president. I really watched everything. Like I’ve watched ‘Apprentice US, Spain, Italy, Australia, Ireland, you have it. And I think it’s a good way to prepare because you know how the tasks are done and you’re psychologically and mentally prepared,” he told ABS-CBNnews.com and other members of the media during the premiere screening of “The Apprentice Asia” last May.

Yabut, 27, said he did not feel the pressure of competing with older and more experienced players.

“I didn’t feel it (pressure) at all. There were both immature and mature people in the show. And since you’re from different backgrounds, you really tend to compromise. So I think the age didn’t really matter at all. You wouldn’t even know what the ages of the people are until you ask,” he said of his fellow competitors, which included a business owner, a financial coach and an auditor, among others.
He ended by saying that he hopes to show the rest of the world that Filipinos can do well, particularly in terms of sales and marketing.

“If you watch other ‘Apprentice’ shows or other seasons, it’s all about marketing and sales. So I felt something and I want to prove that the Pinoy can really do well,” Yabut said.

The Philippines. It’s definitely not paradise. Dan Brown could be right on some points.

But despite the flak our nation has received from international media from time to time, there still must be something pleasant about our nation, right?

Yes, there are many bad and ugly things about The Philippines. But if one can see past a cartoonized Third World reputation, surely there is gold to be found here, to paraphrase the great Steven Seagal.

Read on, because for every naysayer out there, there’s one or two who genuinely enjoyed their stay here.

The Philippines. It’s definitely not paradise, but we’re sure as hell it’s not inferno either.

Quentin Tarantino | Director of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill

  • "I've been wanting to come to the Philippines since I was a little boy, and to actually come here, actually have people know who I am and actually welcome me in this way...it's overwhelming. Absolutely overwhelming!

Being a lifelong fan of grindhouse movies produced in our archipelago in the ‘70s, Tarantino had a blast riding the pedicab on his way to Malacañang to meet then-president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. He even wore a Barong Tagalog in the event’s ceremonies.

The Oscar-winning English actress visited the Philippines to shoot the third act of The Bourne Legacy in Manila and Navotas. It seems like she enjoyed the food here, like lumpia, adobo, and, yes, Soup Number 5. She also seemed to have a grand time in Palawan, comparing the island to the Emerald City.

“We landed in the Philippines on March 2, 1986. It was just days after Marcos had left the country and Corazon Aquino had taken power, and they were trying to figure out what to do with Imelda’s shoes. There were tanks in the streets. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. All in all, it was, as I’ve said, an amazing experience.”
The eccentric character actor’s first trip outside the United States of America was Manila for a shoot of Oliver Stone’s war drama Platoon. Coincidentally, it was also around the time of the 1986 EDSA Revolution, so Depp, who was bunkered in a hotel, witnessed the spectacle of nuns and civilians stopping tanks with roses and songs—a story he often tells during interviews.

    ...the Voice UK semifinalist

Filipino advances to 'Voice UK' semis

    06/08/2013

MANILA, Philippines -- A Filipino contestant in the British edition of the global singing franchise "The Voice" advanced to the competition's semi-finals round Saturday (Manila time), after impressing judges with his "soulful" performance.

Joseph Apostol had the four superstar-coaches of "The Voice UK" on their feet throughout his rendition of the Jackie Wilson hit "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher."

The 21-year-old student, who was born in the Philippines, was given a "Fast Pass" by his coach, Tom Jones, after the well-received performance. The "pass" earns Apostol a sure spot in next week's live performance show, without having to be voted in by the public.

Jones wasn't the only coach impressed with Apostol "going out of his comfort zone."

The Script frontman Danny O'Donoghue noted the "oddity" of Apostol being "a Filipino on a UK show, that sounds like an American soul singer."

"I think you are just coming out of your shell," he told Apostol.

Coach will.i.am mentioned fellow Black Eyed Peas member, apl.de.ap, who is also Filipino, saying the latter singled out Apostol as his favorite from Jones' team. "You are my favorite [too]," will.i.am said, addressing Apostol.

Pop singer Jessie J, meanwhile, expressed confidence that the lone Pinoy in "The Voice UK" will further improve.

"I love the way you are becoming your voice but I want to see it in your body too. Performance-wise, just take it there. I believe next week you will be able to show us that," she said.

Apostol is the latest Filipino to make waves in international talent competitions, following the likes of Jessica Sanchez, Cheesa Laureta, Ramiele Malubay, and Jasmine Trias.

    ...the Filipino supermodel

    Model man

How a career in fashion found Paolo Roldan, Filipino-Canadian male supermodel

Paolo Roldan at the press interview session at the Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2013.

With his 6’2” height and sculpted, muscled physique, it’s not surprising to know that international runway and print model Paolo Roldan didn’t initially dream of becoming a professional model.

Instead, he wanted to become a professional basketball player. Born in the Philippines, Paolo moved to Canada with his family as a young boy. But he would later return to his birth country to try to pursue a career in the sport. “Actually, my first passion was basketball,” shares Paolo in a one-on-one interview during his recent trip to Manila for the Bench Body Holiday 2013 show. “I actually came back to the Philippines to play basketball. Unfortunately it didn’t work out for me.” It was after this frustrated attempt that he decided to take up civil engineering as his undergraduate course. Yet after completing his studies, Paolo chose to heed the call of another path. “I went back to Toronto and a friend advised me to try something new. And that’s how I got into fashion. I started as a retail guy, and from there I became a buyer, then a creative director, and so on and so forth.”

It was when he was on a trip as a fashion buyer in New York that Paolo’s life began an amazing twist, where he was discovered by no less than Boss Models New York founder and owner David Bossman. Despite having the model build, Paolo never saw himself modeling while he was growing up. “I mean, I’ve always been asked [to] since I was younger. But my parents were all about just getting your education, getting a normal job,” he says. “[When I got asked again] I just thought maybe I should try it because it keeps happening over and over.” And the rest is history in the making.

Paolo began his modeling career on a high note, walking the Fashion Weeks in New York and Paris, appearing in the buff in a daring editorial for Vogue Paris—which certainly increased his profile—and landing a major Givenchy ad campaign. While his early body of work may precede him, three years into the industry and he is still going strong. This year, Paolo has walked the men’s show for designer brands Michael Bastian, Giorgio Armani, Diesel, Phillip Plein, among others; his most recent catwalk being for Bench Body during the Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2013 show.

Paolo sees his entry into the fashion industry as a “natural progression,” an interest he credits to his mother, “who’s been dressing me up since I was a little baby!” and something that is in his blood, “an uncle of my dad is actually a designer here in the Philippines, Aureo Alonzo.” Today, Paolo’s personal style changes according to his moods. “Right now I love heritage brands, mainly Double RL, it has a very manly look. But I do like to get suited up and look dapper once in a while.”

One could say that modeling for a popular underwear brand is also a natural progression, reason why today Paolo is Bench Body’s latest endorser. The campaign, shot in New York, was styled by Noel Manapat and photographed by Brent Chua, also an international male model. This could be the reason why Paolo was immediately comfortable with Brent and relaxed at the shoot, even though it was their first time to meet. “Bench contacted my agency in New York. I was actually foreseeing or hoping, at least, for something like that happening. So I was really happy and my agent contacted me about it,” shares Paolo. The images show off his perfectly sculpted body in Bench Body’s athletic-inspired underwear, designed with colorful piping and in contrasting colors.

Despite the tough, bad-boy look his images project, with his serious stares and stoic face, “I’m not technically a bad boy (laughs),” says Paolo. “I may look (does serious face), I mean that’s what looks best. But I’m very (smiling, makes a heart sign with his hands).” A trait that is certain to make him even more irresistible.

    ...the Miss Saigon legend

NY Times raves about Lea Salonga at the Carlyle

Fellow singer Ogie Alcasid once joked in one of Lea Salonga’s local concerts that the Tony award winner had come a long way—“From Broadway Centrum to Broadway!”

In the 1980s, Salonga was among many starry-eyed teenagers who vied for attention in German Moreno’s afternoon youth show, “That’s Entertainment,” aired from the Broadway Centrum studio in Quezon City.

That she managed to rise above “That’s Entertainment” (not to mention another 1980s cult schlock fest, “Ninja Kids”) was a testament to her almost incredible gift, matched with an iron will, as illustrated in the mega-production “Miss Saigon” on the West End and Broadway.

    ‘Formidable’
These are the same personal qualities highlighted in a recent New York Times review.

In the prestigious paper’s May 25 issue, Stephen Holden wrote a rave review about Salonga’s performance in a three-week concert series at the CafĂ© Carlyle that ends tomorrow.

Holden described Salonga as “a performer whose formidable talent is matched by her unstoppable drive and keen intelligence.”

The Filipina’s third outing at the Carlyle, dubbed “Back to Before,” is a tribute to her idols Barbra Streisand and Ella Fitzgerald. Holden reported, “As Broadway divas go, [Salonga] is a cut above most.”

Holden said Salonga’s rendition of standards (for instance, “The Song Is You,” “Manhattan,” “How Long Has This Been Going On”) “[was] delivered with an almost machinelike perfection.”

    Unapologetic

The critic said Salonga’s “unusually strong and focused interpretation” of “Greatest Love of All” (Whitney Houston’s early hit) was apt because its “message of unapologetic self-reliance resonated with (Salonga’s) show business biography.”

Holden, however, noted that, in treading gentler terrain like the lullaby “I Won’t Mind” or Stephen Sondheim’s oeuvre, Salonga “demonstrated her comfort in a more intimate, psychologically subtle mode.”

The piece was titled, “Serenely indomitable, whatever the challenge.”

Meet PH's top philanthropists on Forbes Asia's list

MANILA, Philippines - Four Filipinos, including two tycoons, a perfume manufacturer and an architect, landed on Forbes Asia magazine's list of top philanthropists in the region.
Henry Sy, Sr., the country's richest man, and John L. Gokongwei Jr. were included in the magazine's annual Heroes of Philanthropy list.

Top architect Felino "Jun" A. Palafox Jr. was also on the list, along with mass market perfume manufacturer Joel S. Cruz.

The 88-year-old Sy is the founder and chairman of the SM Group, whose businesses include shopping malls, condos, banks and department stores. Forbes Asia cited the tycoon for giving $7 million to De La Salle University to build an eco-friendly building for the school, and donating $112 million to an un-named foundation.

Gokongwei, who founded conglomerate JG Summit, is chairman of one of the Philippines' most endowed foundations - the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation. He started the foundation with his three brothers in 1992. In 2006, he gifted the foundation with half of his shares in JG Summit, a donation which is now worth more than $1 billion.

"The foundation is the conglomerate’s largest shareholder, with a 29.4% stake worth $2.3 billion. Disbursements are funded out of company dividends and are focused on education," Forbes Asia said.

Palafox, founder and managing partner of Palafox and Associates, was cited by Forbes Asia for donating the firm's services for the design of low-income housing developments. This includes a 12-hectare project for the Smokey Mountain dumpsite community in Manila.

"A former Catholic seminary student, (Palafox) gives money to a program helping needy churches and in the last 5 years, his firm has done pro bono architectural and interior design or master planning for 6 church-related projects," Forbes Asia said.

Cruz, 48, is the founder and CEO of Central Affirmative Co., which makes Aficionado Germany. Forbes Asia cited Cruz for making donations to help abandoned children, as well as elderly and disabled.

"Each year his company — the manufacturer of Aficionado Germany, the country’s leading mass market perfume brand — celebrates its anniversary by giving cash to charities and paying employees to volunteer for a day. Nicknamed the “Lord of Scents,” he plans to launch the Joel S. Cruz Aficionado Foundation in the next year," Forbes Asia said.

Forbes Asia's annual Heroes of Philanthropy list highlights 48 of the region's "most remarkable givers".

"The selections are subjective and we aimed for a mix of notable people and causes. We also try to identify new philanthropists each year and pick only true philanthropists who are giving their own money, not their company’s because donating shareholder funds isn’t charity. By calling attention to these charitable souls, we hope to encourage more giving," John Koppisch, Senior Editor, Forbes Asia, said in a statement.

Other noted philanthropists on Forbes Asia's list were India's biotech entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar-Show; South Korean musician Cho Yong-pil; Chinese CEO Zhang Xin; Japanese talk show host Tetsuko Kuroyanagi; and Miss Universe Malaysia Deborah Henry.

The full list can be found in the June issue of Forbes Asia as well as at www.forbes.com/altruists

    ...the Cannes films awardee

Film with Pinay actress wins at Cannes

    05/27/2013

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine delegation to this year’s Cannes Film Festival are not exactly returning home empty-handed after a film starring a Filipino actress won the prestigious Camera d'Or prize on Sunday.

Singapore’s Anthony Chen won the Camera d'Or for his debut feature “Ilo Ilo” -- the first time that a Singaporean feature has won at Cannes.

The movie, which stars Yeo Yann Yann, Chen Tianwen, newcomer Koh Jia Ler and Filipino film and stage actress Angeli Bayani, is set during the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and explores the lives of Singapore's workaholic, ambitious middle classes and the domestic help on which they depend.

It tells the tale of a Singaporean family and their Filipina maid, who befriends the family's troubled son.

"The director's intelligence and sensitivity bring forth very important issues -- childhood, immigration, class struggles and the economic crisis," said the jury citation.

According to the Singapore Straits Times, the 29-year-old Chen was "very shocked" at the good news and was, in fact, about to leave Cannes on Sunday afternoon to join his wife in London when he got a call from organizers telling him to attend the closing ceremony later in the evening.

“Ilo Ilo” was one of two films starring Bayani that premiered at the prestigious film festival.

Bayani, whose past works include the award-winning indie film “Ka Oryang,” the stage musical “Caredivas” and the ABS-CBN series “Angelito: Batang Ama,” also appeared in “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” by acclaimed filmmaker Lav Diaz.

“Norte” competed in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section along with “Death March,” director Adolfo Alix Jr.’s film about one of the worst atrocities in World War II starring Kapamilya actors Sam Milby and Zanjoe Marudo.

The two Filipino films lost to French-Cambodian director Rithy Panh's "The Missing Picture," an autobiographical documentary that uses clay figures.

Another Filipino film had its world premiere at Cannes -- “On the Job,” starring Kapamilya stars Piolo Pascual and Gerald Anderson. The crime thriller, directed by Erik Matti, was part of the Director’s Fortnight.

But while “On the Job” was shown out of competition, it did pick a different kind of prize. Even before its screening, independent distributor Well Go USA announced that it has acquired all North American rights to “On the Job,” a co-production of Reality Entertainment and Star Cinema. -- With report from Reuters

...the Filipinos talents of HK Disneyland

How Filipino talent continues to bring magic to HK Disneyland

    By Rony Fortich
    Philippine Daily Inquirer

RONY FORTICH, now on his seventh year as music director of Hong Kong Disneyland

In 2005, I was one of hundreds of Filipinos auditioning for a job at Hong Kong Disneyland.

I didn’t have to dance or sing, but the nerves and nausea were still there. You see, my audition for musical director was to run the audition, as Disney executives observed. It involved sight reading, teaching songs and working with the singers.

Among them was Ralion Alonso, theater actor and TV personality. I remember nervously whispering to him and other friends that day: “Hey guys, this is my audition too!”

    JC Santos

Luckily, I didn’t have to wait too long before I found out that I had gotten in. And so did Ral. We were all excited, but truth is, nobody back then really knew what to expect from the job. We just knew we were gonna have fun.

Who knew that fun would be just the tip of the castle? The job would change our lives.

    Grand Opening team

The Grand Opening team, as we called the group that opened Hong Kong Disneyland, had many talented Filipinos from many different dance groups, theater companies, and orchestras.

THE GOLDEN Mickeys—which, from the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005, has included a good number of Filipino cast members. That’s Pheona Baranda in the center foreground.

Dancers were from Power Dance, Ballet Philippines and Hotlegs, among others. Musicians came from the University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, Manila Philharmonic Orchestra, Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and popular jazz bands like Ugoy Ugoy.

Vocalists came from all around too, including companies like Repertory Philippines, Atlantis Productions and Trumpets. I had worked with many of them in my time in the Manila theater scene, and I was thrilled to see them everyday at work.

On board in 2005 were two of Manila’s finest leading men of the theater, Noel Rayos and Roy Rolloda. I had worked with belters Jinky Llamanzares and Tex Ordonez in the Manila production of “Dreamgirls.” Thespians Pheona Baranda and Shiela Valderrama were also part of that opening team. They kicked things off and soon, others would follow.

    Ralion Alonzo

Over the next seven years, other familiar faces from Manila’s theater scene would lend their voices to the entertainment world of HK Disneyland. Leading ladies Cris Villonco and Maita Ponce and theater heartthrob Felix Rivera have all essayed roles on the “Golden Mickeys” stage. Kakki Teodoro of “Batibot” fame sang and danced in the “High School Musical” show.

Theater-pop artists like Anna Fegi joined the cast of the “Festival of the Lion King,” and Raki Vega was in the “Golden Mickeys,” too. Their performances, along with those of the other Filipinos in the shows and parades all over the theme park, have earned much praise from Disney executives, guests from all over the world, and fellow Filipinos.

Their success is quite a tribute really to the Filipino dance groups, theater companies and orchestras that had prepared them all so well.

    Felix Rivera

    Incredible memories

But recognition is only part of what draws hundreds of performers every year to Disneyland auditions. Walt Disney said, “My business is making people, especially children, happy.” And that’s it. That’s the key.

When your job is not only doing something you love to do, but making incredible memories for kids, young and old, to take back home, to look back on, to share—that’s the real fun. You put your marquee name aside for a while and become a Disneyland cast member, the heart of which is much more than just performing. It’s changing other people’s lives.

For any cast member who has had a great day at work, there is for sure a guest who has gone home with a smile. And for any guest who has had an incredible day at Hong Kong Disneyland, there is for sure a Filipino cast member who has played a part in that.

And that, in a word, is magical.

The author is on his seventh year as music director of Hong Kong Disneyland.

...the most influential people in the world

TIME: PNoy one of 'most influential people in world'

    04/18/2013

MANILA (UPDATE) – President Benigno Aquino III is one of the world’s 100 “most influential people” in the annual TIME 100 list.

Howard Chua-Eoan, TIME Magazine’s news director, described Aquino as a courageous President, who “became the face of the regional confrontation with Beijing over its claim to virtually all of the South China Sea.”

“It is a brave stance, the long-term consequences still unknown,” he wrote.

Chua-Eoan also poked fun at the nickname of one of Aquino’s sisters, saying it should be given to him instead.

“For his courage…he really should have the pet name the family gave his eldest sister Maria Elena: Ballsy,” he said.

Aquino was also lauded for stabilizing the country’s “sputtering economy.”

The TIME 100 list is made up prominent individuals, ranging from artists to leaders to icons in various fields.

Aquino joined US President Barack Obama, South Korea President Park Geun-hye, China President Xi Jinping, North Korea leader Kim Jong Un, and Pope Francis, among others, on the prestigious list.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the President gives credit to Filipinos for his inclusion in the list.

“Upon being informed this evening of his inclusion in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential for 2013, President Benigno S. Aquino III responded with a message for the Filipino People: ‘Ito po ay dahil sa inyong lahat,’” Lacierda said in a statement released Thursday night.
