Pinoy named Best Asian-American Student Filmmaker

MANILA, Philippines -- A Filipino has been recognized as the Best Asian American Student Filmmaker by the Directors Guild of America (DGA), the organization announced Wednesday (Manila time).

Representing the "East Region," John Paul Su was awarded the honor at the 2012 DGA Student Film Awards. Along with 15 others, Su was selected by blue ribbon DGA member panels, according to the organization's official website.

Bestowing recognition on African American, Asian American, Latino and women directors, the DGA Student Film Awards "are designed to honor, encourage and bring attention to exceptional minority and women directors in film schools and select universities across the country."

A student of the New York University (NYU), Su, a Chinese-Filipino raised in the Philippines, was recognized for his film "Pagpag."

"Pagpag," in a fund-raising page for the project created in 2011, is described as "the story of Perla, a 70-year-old grandmother and food scavenger, living in the urban slums of Manila, Philippines."

Alternately titled "Garbage Food," the film is a "tale of love and sacrifice that aims to explore the fundamental principle of human value, and how our awareness of an individual's intrinsic worth reflects our actions towards people,especially our loved ones."

Before he moved to New York in 2003, Su, according to his portfolio page, studied at De La Salle University Manila where he graduated with dual Bachelors degrees in the Arts and Sciences, specializing in Communication Arts and Advertising Management, respectively.

Currently, Su is taking up his Master of Fine Arts degree in Film and Television Production at the New York University, Tisch School of the Arts Asia in Singapore.
